Pet Urns in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: what to know
Across the 1 Nouvelle-Aquitaine communities we cover, from Bordeaux to smaller towns, the urn market looks broadly similar: crematory ranges of wood, ceramic and metal, plus online and local makers for anything more personal. What changes is delivery time, the chance to see an urn in person and, in some places, the climate an outdoor memorial has to survive.
Engraving is where most urn orders in Nouvelle-Aquitaine slow down. A plain urn can often be collected or shipped quickly; a name, dates, a photo or a paw print adds a proof, a production step and sometimes weeks. If you have a date in mind, such as a memorial gathering, tell the seller before you order and ask for the making and shipping times separately.

Cremation customs in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and your pet
Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, where about 44.91%[1] are cremated. For pets, though, most families cremate, and that can leave people unsure what to do next, since there's less local habit around urns. Nothing about it is complicated. An urn is simply a container sized to the ashes, and you can choose one whenever you're ready.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Urns in France are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[2] at one crematorium.
In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[3].
| Urn | Published price | Market |
|---|---|---|
| Pet ashes casket | £61–£151[2] | United Kingdom |
| Wooden pet urn | $30–$150[4] | United States |
| Marble or stone pet urn | $80–$300[5] | United States |
| Keepsake or mini urn | $15–$60[6] | United States |

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.
In France, human ashes can't be kept at home, but pet ashes can, so a pet urn (urne animale) is a common choice. Most crématoriums animaliers offer a range of urns with individual cremation, and many families order personalized ones online. Scattering on private land needs the owner's agreement; public spaces may have local rules.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Talk to the family first. Find out who wants a small share, and whether some ashes are going into the ground or the wind.
- Set aside the shares first, and fill the main urn with what remains; the ashes sharing planner works out each person's portion.
- Buy matching keepsakes for family living elsewhere, and deliver them face to face rather than by mail where possible.
- If you must post ashes, read your carrier's rules before packing. USPS is the only US service that takes them, and only via Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn once you know what's left, sized for that amount.
- Plan any scattering for still, dry weather, and hold a small amount in reserve for anyone who asks to take part afterwards.
Remembering your pet, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and beyond
If you have other pets, or may do in the future, think about how their urns will sit together one day. Many families choose a simple design they can match later, so a shelf of two or three urns looks like it belongs together. A local woodworker or a long-established seller is the easiest way to keep the match.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Nouvelle-Aquitaine?
No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
What should I ask a crematory in Nouvelle-Aquitaine about urns?
Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
How many communities do you cover in Nouvelle-Aquitaine?
We currently have local pet urn guides for 1 communities in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, including Bordeaux. Each page covers local price ranges, delivery and engraving timing, climate tips for indoor and outdoor urns, and the basic rules for scattering and burial.
Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Nouvelle-Aquitaine?
It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.
What size urn does my pet need?
Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[8]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Nouvelle-Aquitaine?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
