Choosing a pet urn in Reims
Reims is a city of monuments, from the cathedral to the Champagne houses' chalk cellars, and many families here like the idea of a lasting, crafted memorial. A carved stone, a ceramic urn or a small engraved plaque suits that sense of permanence. If you live in a flat, a compact urn or keepsake box can sit on a shelf without taking space.
Not every memorial needs to be large. A pendant or ring holding a little ash, a paw print in clay, or a framed photo with the collar can mean just as much as an urn. If you're not ready to choose, ask for the ashes in a simple container first, then decide on a lasting memorial when you know what fits your home.
In a place the size of Reims, you'll usually find one or two pet crematories and a handful of vet clinics that return ashes, each with a small range of urns. That covers the basics well: wooden boxes, ceramic jars and a few metal designs. For marble, sculpted figurines or photo urns, most families here order online or look to a larger centre such as Reims, where specialist makers are more common.
With roughly 182,000 residents, Reims is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Grand Est communities we cover.
Our pages for Paris (81 miles, a larger centre), Neuilly-sur-Seine (84 miles) and Versailles (92 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Reims as well.

Cremation customs in France and your pet
Burial is still the usual choice for people in France, with cremation at around 44.91%[1], and some families feel a pet deserves a grave too. An urn can give you that. Placed in the ground at home or in a cemetery plot, under a small stone, it's a place to visit, and it can be lifted and taken along if you ever move house.
Source for the France number: ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Reims, so the human figure is the best local signal available.
Reims weather and your pet's urn
Weather mostly matters for anything you do outdoors. Frost can crack porous ceramic and stone left outside, strong sun fades wood and printed photos, and damp rooms tarnish brass. Indoors, in a lived-in room away from heaters and direct sun, almost any urn will last for decades. Keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside the urn for extra protection.

What families in Reims typically pay for an urn
In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[5].

Before you scatter or bury in Grand Est
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Grand Est.
In France, human ashes can't be kept at home, but pet ashes can, so a pet urn (urne animale) is a common choice. Most crématoriums animaliers offer a range of urns with individual cremation, and many families order personalized ones online. Scattering on private land needs the owner's agreement; public spaces may have local rules.
From temporary container to urn
- Decide whether each pet gets its own urn in its own style, or whether a coordinated set, added to as time passes, appeals more.
- Pick a design that will still be made later, ideally one a nearby craftsperson could reproduce, if future urns need to match.
- Size each urn for one pet; buying a companion urn for two is best left until you actually have both sets of ashes.
- Label the base of every urn with a name and dates, even if the front is engraved, so they're never mixed up.
- Leave shelf space beside the first urn so a later one can join it without rearranging the room.
- File each crematory certificate with its urn, whether that's an envelope fixed to the underside or all of them in one drawer.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
For families with a garden or a house in the countryside around Reims, a planted memorial is a gentle choice: a bio urn with a tree or a rose bush, or a flower bed with a small stone. Cold winters can crack thin materials, so choose natural stone or solid ceramic for anything left outside year-round. Many villages around Reims have old stone walls and orchards that make a quiet corner for a plaque.

Questions people ask
Why does the Reims page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Reims?
The closest communities we cover are Paris (about 81 miles), Neuilly-sur-Seine (about 84 miles) and Versailles (about 92 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Reims too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[7]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
Can I move my pet's ashes into the urn myself?
Yes, and it's usually simpler than people fear. Most ashes come back in a sealed plastic bag, which you can lift out and place straight into the urn. If the bag won't fit through the opening, work over a tray indoors, away from drafts, and use a spoon or wide funnel. Some crematories will transfer the ashes for you if you drop the urn off.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?
Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
