Pet Urns in Berlin: what to know
A useful way to use the Berlin pages is to start with your own town, then look at the largest city nearby. The town page tells you what's typical where you live: how urns reach you and what the weather means for an outdoor memorial. The larger city's page shows what's within a day's drive, such as showrooms, stone workshops and makers who take commissions.
Engraving is where most urn orders in Berlin slow down. A plain urn can often be collected or shipped quickly; a name, dates, a photo or a paw print adds a proof, a production step and sometimes weeks. If you have a date in mind, such as a memorial gathering, tell the seller before you order and ask for the making and shipping times separately.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
Cremation is the usual choice in Berlin: about 76.0%[1] of people there are cremated. When cremation is this familiar, keeping ashes at home isn't unusual, and most people have seen an urn on a relative's shelf. That tends to carry over to pets. Families here rarely feel they need to explain why their dog's or cat's ashes live in the living room, and local crematories are used to selling urns alongside the cremation.
Source for the Berlin figure: Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes human funerals and is here as context, not as a count of pets.
Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[2].
Urns in Germany are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[3] at one crematorium.
| Urn | Published price | Market |
|---|---|---|
| Pet ashes casket | £61–£151[3] | United Kingdom |
| Wooden pet urn | $30–$150[4] | United States |
| Marble or stone pet urn | $80–$300[5] | United States |
| Keepsake or mini urn | $15–$60[6] | United States |

Before you scatter or bury in Berlin
Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for Berlin follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.
In Germany, strict rules about keeping human ashes at home don't apply to pets, so a pet urn (Tierurne) can stay on your shelf as long as you like. Most Tierkrematorien sell urns with the cremation, and pet cemeteries (Tierfriedhöfe) accept urn burials. Urns are sized in litres, and burying ashes in your own garden is generally possible outside water-protection areas.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Decide whether each pet gets its own urn in its own style, or whether a coordinated set, added to as time passes, appeals more.
- Pick a design that will still be made later, or one a local maker can repeat, if a match matters to you.
- Size each urn for one pet; buying a companion urn for two is best left until you actually have both sets of ashes.
- Label the base of every urn, naming who it holds and when, whatever is engraved on the front, so there's no confusion later.
- Leave shelf space next to the first urn, so that adding another later doesn't mean moving everything around.
- File each crematory certificate with its urn, in an envelope taped underneath or kept together in a drawer.
Small ways to keep your pet's memory close
Some families tuck the collar tag, a whisker or a lock of fur inside the urn alongside the sealed bag of ashes. It keeps the whole story in one place. Check there's room first, especially for a big dog: by our estimate, a giant-breed dog of about 108 lb returns around 3.8 lb[8] of ashes, which fills a large urn quicker than people expect.

Questions people ask
How much does a pet urn cost in Berlin?
Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[3]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Berlin?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
Which places in Berlin have the widest choice of pet urns?
Usually the largest cities, such as Berlin, where crematories keep display ranges and independent makers and engravers are easier to find. Smaller towns rely more on the vet clinic's catalog and on delivery from online shops. If you'd like to see urns in person, a trip to the nearest large city can be worth it for stone or glass.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Berlin?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Berlin?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Berlin?
Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Berlin and winter lows near °F in Berlin, the right choice depends on where you are.

- [7] Using the industry rule of thumb of 1 cubic inch of urn space per pound of body weight, a 12 lb cat needs an urn of about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog needs about 70 cubic inches. Our estimate: urn cu in = body weight lb x 1 (industry rule of thumb, not a measured value). How we calculate.
- [8] A median-weight giant-breed dog (48.8 kg / 108 lb) would be expected to return about 1.71 kg (3.8 lb) of cremated remains, needing an urn of about 108 cubic inches. Our estimate: 48.8 kg x 3.5% x 2.2046 lb/kg; urn = 108 lb x 1 cu in/lb. How we calculate.
