About 76.0%[1] of people in Germany are cremated, one of the higher rates around. A high cremation rate means a well-developed market for urns: more sellers, more materials and more local engravers who've done it before. For pet owners, that mostly means choice and competition, so it's worth comparing a crematory's counter price with an online maker's delivered price before deciding.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Germany
Urns in Germany are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[2] at one crematorium.
In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[3].

What Germany allows with pet ashes
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Germany.
In Germany, strict rules about keeping human ashes at home don't apply to pets, so a pet urn (Tierurne) can stay on your shelf as long as you like. Most Tierkrematorien sell urns with the cremation, and pet cemeteries (Tierfriedhöfe) accept urn burials. Urns are sized in litres, and burying ashes in your own garden is generally possible outside water-protection areas.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Bring the ashes home as they are. That interim box is closed and secure; they can stay in it as long as you like.
- Weigh up how many people want a share. A partner, a child away at college, a parent in another state: decide before buying anything.
- Work out the capacity you need. Allow about one cubic inch per pound of your pet's healthy weight, or use the urn size calculator.
- Choose the material for the room it will live in. Wood for warmth, ceramic for color, brass for small spaces, stone for durability.
- Approve a written proof before anything is engraved, reading the name letter by letter a second time.
- Move the ashes in their sealed bag straight into the urn, or ask the crematory to do it for you.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
An urn doesn't have to be the final resting place. Plenty of people keep the ashes at home for a year or two and then decide to bury them, scatter them or split them further. Choosing an urn that opens easily, with the ashes still in their sealed bag, keeps every one of those choices open.

What should I ask a crematory in Germany about urns?
Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Germany?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Germany?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Germany?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Germany?
No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
