Pet Urns in Hesse: what to know
Across the 2 Hesse communities we cover, from Frankfurt and Wiesbaden to smaller towns, the urn market looks broadly similar: crematory ranges of wood, ceramic and metal, plus online and local makers for anything more personal. What changes is delivery time, the chance to see an urn in person and, in some places, the climate an outdoor memorial has to survive.
Most families in Hesse buy their pet's urn from one of three places: the crematory that handled the cremation, an online seller or a local maker. Each has its strengths. The crematory's urns are sized to the ashes it returns; online shops offer the widest range; a local potter or woodworker can make something no one else has. Our city pages cover what's typical in each place.

Why urns are common in Hesse
In Hesse, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already have a view on urns: whether they like them on display, prefer to scatter, or split the difference. Pet owners here often do the same thing they'd do for a person, keeping a main urn at home and a little in a keepsake or two. It's a practical, unfussy approach, and there's no wrong version of it.
That Hesse rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
Urns in Germany are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[2] at one crematorium.
Prices for pet urns in Germany vary by maker and material, and we don't yet have a local source we can cite. Rather than an invented range, here's a useful rule from published lists elsewhere: engraving on a mid-priced wooden urn can add about a third to its price[3], so always ask whether the price quoted in Hesse includes personalization.

Before you scatter or bury in Hesse
Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for Hesse follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.
In Germany, strict rules about keeping human ashes at home don't apply to pets, so a pet urn (Tierurne) can stay on your shelf as long as you like. Most Tierkrematorien sell urns with the cremation, and pet cemeteries (Tierfriedhöfe) accept urn burials. Urns are sized in litres, and burying ashes in your own garden is generally possible outside water-protection areas.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Give yourself a week or two before choosing. The first days are rarely the best time for design decisions.
- Picture where the urn will sit, then measure the space: shelf depth, height under a cabinet, width on a mantelpiece.
- Estimate the ashes. Roughly 3-5% of body weight[8] comes back as cremated remains; for a figure based on your own pet, try the ashes weight estimator.
- Decide on personalization, whether dates and a name, a photo, a paw impression or a plain surface.
- Order the main urn and any keepsakes together, then each piece shares one finish.
- Transfer the ashes over a tray, indoors and away from drafts, if the bag won't fit through the opening.
- Keep the crematory's certificate or label with the urn, tucked underneath or in a drawer nearby.
Small ways to keep your pet's memory close
Children often want something of their own to hold. A small keepsake urn on a bedside table, or a soft photo cushion, can help a child in Hesse feel included without keeping the main urn in their room. Let them help choose it, or write something to go inside the urn's base.

Questions people ask
How many communities do you cover in Hesse?
We currently have local pet urn guides for 2 communities in Hesse, including Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. Each page covers local price ranges, delivery and engraving timing, climate tips for indoor and outdoor urns, and the basic rules for scattering and burial.
Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Hesse?
Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Hesse and winter lows near °F in Hesse, the right choice depends on where you are.
What size urn does my pet need?
Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[9]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Hesse?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Hesse?
It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Hesse?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
