Pet urns and keepsakes in Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Hesse

How Frankfurt families shop for a pet urn

Frankfurt apartments suit memorials that sit comfortably on a shelf or windowsill. German workshops make plain urns in oak, ceramic and slate, as well as small keepsake pendants and engraved stones, and many offer laser engraving of the name and dates. Urn sizes vary a great deal with the size of the animal, so ask your provider how much ash to expect before ordering anything online.

Germany has a long tradition of pet cemeteries, and several serve the Rhine-Main area, which appeals to families who want a grave to visit with flowers on the anniversary. Others keep the urn at home and light a candle on the day. Both are common in Hesse, and there is no need to decide immediately; ashes can be kept safely until you are ready.

Space is the quiet constraint in Frankfurt. Plenty of households here keep the urn inside a bookcase, on a windowsill or in a wall niche rather than on a mantelpiece. Measure the height between shelves before you buy: a tall vase-style urn that looks elegant online may not clear a standard shelf, while a low box or a round urn tucks in easily.

With roughly 764,000 residents, Frankfurt is the largest of the 2 Hesse communities we cover.

If you want to compare providers, look at Wiesbaden (20 miles), Mainz (21 miles) and Mannheim (44 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How Germany thinks about cremation and urns

About 76.0%[1] of people in Germany are cremated, one of the higher rates around. A high cremation rate means a well-developed market for urns: more sellers, more materials and more local engravers who've done it before. For pet owners, that mostly means choice and competition, so it's worth comparing a crematory's counter price with an online maker's delivered price before deciding.

That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Frankfurt only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Frankfurt weather and your pet's urn

Weather mostly matters for anything you do outdoors. Frost can crack porous ceramic and stone left outside, strong sun fades wood and printed photos, and damp rooms tarnish brass. Indoors, in a lived-in room away from heaters and direct sun, almost any urn will last for decades. Keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside the urn for extra protection.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them

In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[5].

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Hesse: Hesse costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Pet ashes and the law in Hesse

Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Hesse.

In Germany, strict rules about keeping human ashes at home don't apply to pets, so a pet urn (Tierurne) can stay on your shelf as long as you like. Most Tierkrematorien sell urns with the cremation, and pet cemeteries (Tierfriedhöfe) accept urn burials. Urns are sized in litres, and burying ashes in your own garden is generally possible outside water-protection areas.

Step by step in Frankfurt

  1. Ask what came with the cremation. Many packages include a basic urn, and some let you upgrade for the difference.
  2. Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
  3. Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
  4. Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, as both figures count when you have a day in mind.
  5. Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
  6. Place it out of direct sun and away from heaters, on a stable surface at a height pets and children can't reach.

Keeping your pet close in Frankfurt

The Stadtwald south of the Main and the riverside paths along both banks are familiar ground for many Frankfurt pet owners. Scattering ashes in city woods or parks is generally not something you can simply do in Germany, so look into it first. A biodegradable urn under a young tree on family property in the Taunus or Odenwald, or a memorial stone in a private garden, can give you a place to return to.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Frankfurt?

The closest communities we cover are Wiesbaden (about 20 miles), Mainz (about 21 miles) and Mannheim (about 44 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Frankfurt too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Why does the Frankfurt page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park near Frankfurt?

Often you can, but parks set their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot away from paths, playgrounds and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and leave nothing behind. If you're unsure, check with the parks department or scatter on private land with the owner's agreement.

What size urn does my dog or cat need?

The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[7]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.

Do I have to buy an urn right away?

No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in Frankfurt wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.

Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?

Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
