How Munich families shop for a pet urn
Munich's garden-burial rules are conditional, so some families prefer to keep ashes rather than bury a body at home. Ashes can later be placed in a pet cemetery, buried in a biodegradable urn in a garden where that is allowed, or kept at home in an urn or keepsake. Ask the provider what applies to ashes as opposed to a body, and what paperwork you receive to show where the ashes came from.
The Alps are close enough that many Munich families want a memorial connected to the mountains: an engraved stone, a photo from a favourite valley, or a small portion of ashes kept in a keepsake. Before scattering ashes in the mountains or in the Isar, check the rules. Paw prints and fur clippings taken before cremation are simple, lasting keepsakes.
People in large cities move more often than most, between apartments, neighborhoods and sometimes countries. That's a good reason to choose an urn that travels well: solid wood or metal rather than thin glass, a lid that locks or screws shut and a size you can carry in a bag. If you expect to fly with the ashes one day, wood and plastic pass airport X-ray screening more easily than dense metal or stone.
Munich's population is around 1,472,000, the largest of the 5 Bavaria communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Starnberg (14 miles), Augsburg (35 miles) and Regensburg (65 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Munich too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Cremation in Germany, and what it means for urns
With roughly 76.0%[1] of people in Germany cremated, the question locally isn't whether to keep ashes but how. That's where urn choice comes in. Many people here have inherited a relative's urn and have strong opinions about what they'd do differently: a smaller size, a lid that screws shut, a material that doesn't show dust. Those lessons apply just as well to a pet.
That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Munich only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Munich
Local weather also affects deliveries. Storms, extreme heat and holiday rushes can all add days to an urn's journey, and fragile ceramic or glass travels best in mild weather. If a date matters, order early and ask the seller for the making time and shipping time separately. Your provider in Munich can tell you what they'd recommend at this time of year.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
We haven't found published pet urn price lists for Germany that we can cite yet, so we won't guess at local prices. What we can show is the closest honest comparison: a UK crematorium's published caskets run £61–£151[5], and US guides put wooden pet urns at $30–$150[3]. Most pet crematoria in Munich sell their own range, so ask for a written price that includes engraving.

What Bavaria allows with pet ashes
If you rent in Munich, burying an urn in the yard needs your landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can have their own rules. Scattering on public land is usually tolerated when done discreetly, but it isn't always permitted. The notes below cover the basics for Bavaria; your city or county has the final word.
Munich's own guidance is published by City of Munich Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb München; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation.
In Germany, strict rules about keeping human ashes at home don't apply to pets, so a pet urn (Tierurne) can stay on your shelf as long as you like. Most Tierkrematorien sell urns with the cremation, and pet cemeteries (Tierfriedhöfe) accept urn burials. Urns are sized in litres, and burying ashes in your own garden is generally possible outside water-protection areas.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Tell your child the ashes are coming home, describing them beforehand: a closed bag inside an ordinary tin or box.
- Let them help choose, from two or three urns you've already checked for size and price.
- Offer a small keepsake of their own for their room, while the main urn stays in a shared space.
- Invite them to add something: a drawing or a short note can be tucked under the base.
- Pick a lid that screws or locks shut, especially if the urn will sit within reach of small hands.
- Mark the day the urn arrives with a moment together, such as lighting a candle or telling a favorite story.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Bavaria has deep Catholic traditions around remembering the dead, including visiting graves on All Saints' Day, and some Munich families extend that to pets with a candle at home or a visit to a pet cemetery. A plot, an urn on a shelf, a stone in the garden or a piece of jewellery with a little ash are all common choices. Ask about options before the cremation.

Questions people ask
Why does the Munich page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Munich?
The closest communities we cover are Starnberg (about 14 miles), Augsburg (about 35 miles) and Regensburg (about 65 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Munich too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I see pet urns in person in Munich before buying?
Usually yes. Many pet crematories in a city the size of Munich keep display cabinets, and some memorial suppliers and craft studios have showrooms. Handling an urn tells you its real weight, finish and how the lid works. Call ahead to ask what's on display, and bring your pet's weight so you can check capacity on the spot.
How do I stop a delivered urn from going missing in my building?
Ask the seller to require a signature, have it sent to your workplace or choose a local pickup point. If your building has a package room, let the front desk know a fragile item is coming. Open the box the same day and report any damage straight away, since most sellers set a short window for claims.
Can I bury my pet's urn in my yard in Bavaria?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed, and it's much simpler than burying a body. If you rent, ask your landlord; if you're in a homeowners' association, check its rules. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, consider keeping a small portion indoors in a keepsake.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?
Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
