Cremation is familiar in Germany, where roughly 76.0%[1] of deaths end in it, and that familiarity has a practical upside: people know what an urn weighs, how much it holds and how awkward a lid can be. Pet owners here tend to ask sellers sharp questions, and you should too. Get the capacity, the way it closes and the delivery date in writing before you pay.

What Bavaria allows with pet ashes
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Bavaria.
In Germany, strict rules about keeping human ashes at home don't apply to pets, so a pet urn (Tierurne) can stay on your shelf as long as you like. Most Tierkrematorien sell urns with the cremation, and pet cemeteries (Tierfriedhöfe) accept urn burials. Urns are sized in litres, and burying ashes in your own garden is generally possible outside water-protection areas.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Ask what came with the cremation. A simple urn often comes as part of the package, sometimes with the option to trade up.
- Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
- Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
- Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, especially if a date matters.
- Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
- Place it out of direct sun and away from heaters, on a stable surface at a height pets and children can't reach.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials

Which nearby towns can I compare with Nuremberg?

Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?

Is it cheaper to buy a pet urn locally or online?
Online prices often look lower, but shipping, engraving and the risk of a breakage can close the gap. A crematory's counter price is convenient and the urn is sized to the ashes. Can two pets share one urn?
Yes. Companion urns are made to hold two sets of ashes, sometimes in separate compartments. Many families prefer matching single urns instead, because pets rarely die at the same time and a companion urn can sit half empty for years. If you do choose a shared urn, size it for both pets' combined weight.
