Pet Urns in Ireland

Pet Urns in Ireland: what to know

Across Ireland, keeping a pet's ashes at home is common wherever cremation is. The practical questions are the same in every city: how big the urn needs to be, what material suits the home and climate, and whether any ashes will be shared, scattered or buried. Local rules mostly apply to the last two.

If you're in Ireland and trying to work out what to spend, start with the prices a local crematory publishes and compare them with the delivered, engraved price of any urn you like online. Our city pages list sourced price ranges and the questions worth asking before you order.

We cover 3 communities in Ireland, from Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Cremation customs in Ireland and your pet

Cremation is less common for people in Ireland, at about 26.56%[1], so choosing a pet urn can feel unfamiliar, and relatives may have opinions. There's no need to follow a family custom meant for people. Many owners keep the ashes at home in a simple wooden box and decide about burial or scattering later, once the first weeks have passed.

We take the Ireland percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

What pet urns cost in Ireland

Prices for pet urns in Ireland vary by maker and material, and we don't yet have a local source we can cite. Rather than an invented range, here's a useful rule from published lists elsewhere: engraving on a mid-priced wooden urn can add about a third to its price[2], so always ask whether the price quoted in Ireland includes personalization.

Urns in Ireland are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[3] at one crematorium.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury

Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Ireland.

In Ireland, there are fewer pet crematoria than in the UK, so many families order urns online, often from British sellers. Since Brexit, parcels from Great Britain can attract VAT or customs charges, so check the delivered price before ordering. Your crematorium's own range avoids that, and it's sized for the ashes it returns.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Leave the temporary container sealed until the urn has arrived and you've checked it.
  2. Read how the urn opens. A wooden urn often has a screwed panel underneath, while a metal one usually unscrews at the top.
  3. Lay out a towel or tray on a table, and have a spoon or funnel ready in case you need it.
  4. Place the sealed bag inside and fold the top over. Only open the bag if it truly won't fit.
  5. Close and secure the urn; a small dab of adhesive on a threaded lid stops curious hands and paws.
  6. Recycle or keep the temporary box; plenty of people store it alongside the paperwork, since it's part of the story.

Small ways to keep your pet's memory close

Some families in Ireland put together a small memorial shelf: the urn, a framed photo, a paw print and the tag from their pet's collar. It becomes a place to stop for a moment rather than a shrine. If you'd like a paw print and didn't get one before the cremation, a photo-engraved paw design on the urn itself is a gentle alternative.

Questions people ask

How much does a pet urn cost in Ireland?

Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[3]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.

How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Ireland?

It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.

How many communities do you cover in Ireland?

We currently have local pet urn guides for 3 communities in Ireland, including Dublin, Cork and Galway. Each page covers local price ranges, delivery and engraving timing, climate tips for indoor and outdoor urns, and the basic rules for scattering and burial.

Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Ireland?

It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.

How can our family share a pet's ashes across Ireland?

Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[6] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.

Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Ireland?

No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
