Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Ireland, where about 26.56%[1] are cremated. For pets, though, most families cremate, and that can leave people unsure what to do next, since there's less local habit around urns. Nothing about it is complicated. An urn is simply a container sized to the ashes, and you can choose one whenever you're ready.

Before you scatter or bury in Connacht
Rules about pet ashes are about places, not containers. The urn you choose, whether it's engraved and how long you keep it are entirely your call. What follows for Connacht covers where scattering and burial are generally accepted, so you can plan any outdoor part of the memorial without worrying.
In Ireland, there are fewer pet crematoria than in the UK, so many families order urns online, often from British sellers. Since Brexit, parcels from Great Britain can attract VAT or customs charges, so check the delivered price before ordering. Your crematorium's own range avoids that, and it's sized for the ashes it returns.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Ask what came with the cremation. A simple urn often comes as part of the package, sometimes with the option to trade up.
- Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
- Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
- Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, especially if a date matters.
- Unpack the urn the day it arrives, so any chip or dent gets reported without delay.
- Place it out of direct sun and away from heaters, on a stable surface at a height pets and children can't reach.

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) reports about 26.56%[1] of Ireland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Do I have to buy an urn right away?
No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in Galway wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.
Can the crematory send the urn straight to our home near Galway?
Many can, though some prefer to return ashes through the vet clinic. Ask when you arrange the cremation. If they ship it, ask how the ashes will be packed, which carrier they use and whether a signature is needed. For a heavy stone urn, collecting it from the clinic may be simpler than waiting for a rural delivery.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
Can I bury my pet's urn in my yard in Connacht?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed, and it's much simpler than burying a body. If you rent, ask your landlord; if you're in a homeowners' association, check its rules. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, consider keeping a small portion indoors in a keepsake.
