Portofino, Liguria
What choosing an urn is like in Portofino
The waters around the Portofino promontory are a protected marine area, and scattering ashes at sea or in the natural park is subject to rules, so check first. Many families instead keep the ashes at home and visit places connected with their pet: the path to the lighthouse, the church of San Giorgio above the harbour, or a bench with a view over the bay.
Terraced gardens on the Ligurian coast grow olives, lemons, rosemary and bougainvillea, and a lemon tree in a large pot, planted with ashes worked into the soil, suits a terrace in Portofino. Slate, quarried in the Ligurian hills for centuries, makes a durable marker that stands up to the sea air, which quickly corrodes most ordinary metals. Keep a small portion aside if you may sell the house one day.
Online orders to Portofino and nearby rural addresses can take a few days longer than they would to a larger centre like Genoa, and carriers sometimes leave parcels at a gate or a mailbox cluster. For a fragile ceramic or glass urn, that's a risk. Ask the seller how it's packed, whether you can require a signature, and whether they'll ship to your vet clinic or a local business where someone signs for it.
Portofino's population is around 400, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Liguria communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Portofino are based about 15 miles away in Genoa, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Portofino sits within easy reach of Genoa (15 miles, a larger centre), Milan (80 miles, a larger centre) and Turin (92 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Portofino; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Why urns are common in Italy
Cremation is less common for people in Italy, at about 38.16%[1], so choosing a pet urn can feel unfamiliar, and relatives may have opinions. There's no need to follow a family custom meant for people. Many owners keep the ashes at home in a simple wooden box and decide about burial or scattering later, once the first weeks have passed.
That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Portofino only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Timing a burial or scattering in Portofino
Wherever you live, the room the urn sits in matters more than the weather outside. Bathrooms and kitchens bring steam and grease, and a spot beside an outside door catches drafts. A shelf in a bedroom, study or living room, out of direct sunlight, keeps most urns looking the way they did the day they arrived.

How much to budget for an urn
Urns in Italy are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[5] at one crematorium.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Liguria.
In Italy, pet crematoria usually offer urns with an individual cremation, and many families keep the ashes at home. Local rules on scattering vary between regions and comuni, so check before scattering in a public place. Urns are sized in litres, and ceramic urns from Italian makers are a popular choice.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Bring the ashes home as they are. The temporary container is sealed and safe; there's no deadline for moving them.
- Weigh up how many people want a share. A partner, a child away at college, a parent in another state: decide before buying anything.
- Work out the capacity you need. The rule of thumb is one cubic inch for every pound your pet weighed when well; the urn size calculator does the sum for you.
- Choose the material for the room it will live in. Wood for warmth, ceramic for color, brass for small spaces, stone for durability.
- Approve a written proof before anything is engraved, reading the name letter by letter a second time.
- Move the ashes in their sealed bag without opening it, or have the crematory place them in the urn on your behalf.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials
Cremation of people in Italy is close to four in ten nationally and rising, with the north ahead of the south. For pets it is becoming the usual choice. In a Portofino flat, space is limited and memorials tend to be small and fine: a Ligurian slate tile engraved with a name, a little ceramic urn, or a gold charm holding a trace of ash.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Genoa to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Genoa (roughly 15 miles from Portofino) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Portofino page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Portofino?
The closest communities we cover are Genoa (about 15 miles), Milan (about 80 miles) and Turin (about 92 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Portofino too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?
Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
Is it okay to bury the ashes on our land near Portofino?
On land you own, burying ashes is generally fine and much simpler than burying a body. Choose a spot away from wells and streams, and use a biodegradable urn if you want the ashes to return to the soil. If the property might be sold one day, keep a small portion indoors so you're not leaving everything behind.
Can I move my pet's ashes into the urn myself?
Yes, and it's usually simpler than people fear. Most ashes come back in a sealed plastic bag, which you can lift out and place straight into the urn. If the bag won't fit through the opening, work over a tray indoors, away from drafts, and use a spoon or wide funnel. Some crematories will transfer the ashes for you if you drop the urn off.
