Only around 38.16%[1] of deaths in Italy end in cremation, so many pet owners here have never held an urn or seen ashes. It helps to know what to expect: ashes are pale, coarse and heavier than they look, packed in a sealed bag. Once you've seen them, choosing a container stops feeling strange and becomes a practical job you can do well.
That Italy rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What pet urns cost in Italy
Prices for pet urns in Italy vary by maker and material, and we don't yet have a local source we can cite. Rather than an invented range, here's a useful rule from published lists elsewhere: engraving on a mid-priced wooden urn can add about a third to its price[2], so always ask whether the price quoted in Italy includes personalization.
Urns in Italy are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Italy
Nobody needs a permit to keep an urn on a shelf. Permission only comes into it once part of the ashes goes somewhere shared, such as a park, a beach, a river or a cemetery. Before any of that, find out who looks after the place you have in mind, since the answer usually comes from them rather than from a single law. The general picture for Italy is below.
In Italy, pet crematoria usually offer urns with an individual cremation, and many families keep the ashes at home. Local rules on scattering vary between regions and comuni, so check before scattering in a public place. Urns are sized in litres, and ceramic urns from Italian makers are a popular choice.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Decide whether the urn is for display, burial or travel. That one choice rules out half the options.
- For display, choose a material that suits your room and light, and a size close to your pet's ashes.
- For burial, pick something that breaks down naturally or a sealed box, having confirmed what Italy rules and the landowner allow.
- For travel, choose wood or a sturdy container that can pass airport X-ray screening, and carry it in hand luggage.

Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Italy?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Italy?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Italy?
Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Italy and winter lows near °F in Italy, the right choice depends on where you are.
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Italy choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
What size urn does my pet need?
Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[7]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.
