Palermo, Sicily
Buying an urn locally or online in Palermo
In Sicily, the Festa dei Morti on 2 November is a day when families remember those who have died, and children traditionally receive gifts said to come from departed relatives. Some families now include pets in that remembrance, placing a candle beside an urn, a framed photograph, a keepsake box or a small memorial stone. A sugar doll or a plate of marzipan fruit on the table is a very Palermitan touch.
Monte Pellegrino, the bay at Mondello and the Parco della Favorita are places many Palermo families shared with their pets. Italian rules on dispersing ashes are strict and vary by region and comune, so ask at the comune before planning anything outdoors. Many Palermo owners instead bury a biodegradable urn under a lemon tree or bougainvillea in a terracotta pot, or set a small marble plaque in a family garden.
Most private cremation packages in Palermo already include something to bring the ashes home in, from a plain tin to a simple wooden urn. Before you buy separately, ask exactly what's included and whether the crematory will swap the standard container for an upgrade at a price difference rather than full retail. If you already own an urn, some providers will place the ashes into it for you if you drop it off in time.
Palermo is home to about 676,000 people, the largest of the 2 Sicily communities we cover.
Our pages for Catania (103 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Palermo as well.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
Burial is still the usual choice for people in Italy, with cremation at around 38.16%[1], and some families feel a pet deserves a grave too. An urn can give you that. Placed in the ground at home or in a cemetery plot, under a small stone, it's a place to visit, and it can be lifted and taken along if you ever move house.
The Italy percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Palermo, not as a count of pets.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Palermo
Wherever you live, the room the urn sits in matters more than the weather outside. Bathrooms and kitchens bring steam and grease, and a spot beside an outside door catches drafts. A shelf in a bedroom, study or living room, out of direct sunlight, keeps most urns looking the way they did the day they arrived.

Pet urn and engraving prices for Palermo
Prices for pet urns in Italy vary by maker and material, and we don't yet have a local source we can cite. Rather than an invented range, here's a useful rule from published lists elsewhere: engraving on a mid-priced wooden urn can add about a third to its price[5], so always ask whether the price quoted in Palermo includes personalization.

Pet ashes and the law in Sicily
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Sicily.
In Italy, pet crematoria usually offer urns with an individual cremation, and many families keep the ashes at home. Local rules on scattering vary between regions and comuni, so check before scattering in a public place. Urns are sized in litres, and ceramic urns from Italian makers are a popular choice.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, so the choice isn't made at a front desk afterwards.
- Choose while your pet is still with you if that feels right; some families find it easier while there's time.
- Size the urn from their weight at their best, then add a small margin so the bag goes in without forcing.
- Tell the crematory which urn you've picked so the ashes can be transferred into it before you collect them.
- Leave the engraving until the dates are final. A plate can be fixed to the urn a week or two later.
- Plan who will collect the urn, or who will be home to sign for it if it's delivered.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Palermo apartments suit compact memorials, and Sicily's ceramic tradition, from Caltagirone to Santo Stefano di Camastra, offers plenty of inspiration. A painted tile with your pet's name, a small hand-decorated urn, a pendant holding a trace of ash or an engraved stone for a balcony all fit local homes. Confirm how much ash to expect before ordering a vessel so it fits.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Palermo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I see pet urns in person in Palermo before buying?
Usually yes. Many pet crematories in a city the size of Palermo keep display cabinets, and some memorial suppliers and craft studios have showrooms. Handling an urn tells you its real weight, finish and how the lid works. Call ahead to ask what's on display, and bring your pet's weight so you can check capacity on the spot.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[6]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
Do I have to buy an urn right away?
No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in Palermo wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.
What urn suits a small apartment in Palermo?
A compact box or a small round metal urn that screws shut usually works in tight spaces, since both fit on a bookshelf and are hard to knock over. Measure the shelf depth and the height between shelves before buying. If a cat climbs the shelves, a small pad of museum putty under the base keeps the urn in place without marking the wood.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park near Palermo?
Often you can, but parks set their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot away from paths, playgrounds and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and leave nothing behind. If you're unsure, check with the parks department or scatter on private land with the owner's agreement.
