Pet Urns in Sicily: what to know
Across Sicily, one question comes up more often than price or material: what to do when people in the family want different things. One wants the ashes at home, another wants them scattered, a third wants a pendant. The answer is usually all three. Keep the shares small, write down who has what and choose the main urn last.
Engraving is where most urn orders in Sicily slow down. A plain urn can often be collected or shipped quickly; a name, dates, a photo or a paw print adds a proof, a production step and sometimes weeks. If you have a date in mind, such as a memorial gathering, tell the seller before you order and ask for the making and shipping times separately.

Cremation customs in Sicily and your pet
At roughly 38.16%[1], the cremation rate in Sicily is on the low side. Where cremation is less usual, faith leaders and older relatives may have questions about keeping ashes at home. Many traditions see an animal's remains differently from a person's, but a conversation beforehand can spare hurt feelings. A modest urn in a private room is an easy middle ground.
We take the Sicily percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
Keepsakes are where European families in Sicily most often overspend without meaning to. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake can cost ~1.34×[2] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same seller, because small pieces carry the same handling and engraving costs. We can't cite local euro prices yet; for a benchmark, a pendant made with pet ashes costs £170[3] at a UK glass studio. Decide how many keepsakes you truly need before ordering.
Urns in Italy are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[4] at one crematorium.
| Urn | Published price | Market |

Before you scatter or bury in Sicily
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Sicily.
In Italy, pet crematoria usually offer urns with an individual cremation, and many families keep the ashes at home. Local rules on scattering vary between regions and comuni, so check before scattering in a public place. Urns are sized in litres, and ceramic urns from Italian makers are a popular choice.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Leave the temporary container sealed right up until the new urn is in your hands and looked over.
- Read how the urn opens. Many wooden urns open from the base with small screws; many metal ones have a threaded lid.
- Lay out a towel or tray across a table, with a funnel or spoon within reach should the bag need decanting.
- Place the sealed bag inside and fold the top over. Only open the bag if it truly won't fit.
- Close and secure the urn; on a threaded lid, a touch of glue keeps children and other pets from working it loose.
- Recycle or keep the temporary box; plenty of people store it alongside the paperwork, since it's part of the story.
Remembering your pet, in Sicily and beyond
For some families, the most meaningful memorial is a living one: a tree planted with a biodegradable urn, a rose bed in the garden or a bench somewhere your pet loved. You can combine one with an indoor urn by setting aside a portion of the ashes first. Our guide to ash volume, temporary containers and shares explains how shares are usually packed.

Questions people ask
Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Sicily?
No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Sicily?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Sicily choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Sicily?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Sicily?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Sicily?
It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.
