Como, Lombardy
Buying an urn locally or online in Como
Italy cremates fewer than half of its dead, though the practice is more common in Lombardy than in the south, and many older relatives still think of burial first. For a pet, cremation is widely accepted. Families keep the ashes at home, bury them under a tree in the garden where that is allowed, or choose a pet cemetery. Nobody needs to decide this week.
Como's centuries of silk weaving and careful craftsmanship still show in its workshops, and some families want a pet memorial that reflects that: a hand-thrown ceramic urn, a small piece of carved local stone, or a ring or pendant holding a trace of ashes. In a small flat, a compact piece on a shelf suits the space. Check any engraving letter by letter before it is made.
Online orders to Como and nearby rural addresses can take a few days longer than they would to a larger centre like Milan, and carriers sometimes leave parcels at a gate or a mailbox cluster. For a fragile ceramic or glass urn, that's a risk. Ask the seller how it's packed, whether you can require a signature, and whether they'll ship to your vet clinic or a local business where someone signs for it.
With roughly 84,000 residents, Como is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Lombardy communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Como are based about 24 miles away in Milan, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Milan (24 miles, a larger centre), Turin (85 miles, a larger centre) and Verona (96 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Como as well.

Cremation in Italy, and what it means for urns
Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Italy, where about 38.16%[1] are cremated. For pets, though, most families cremate, and that can leave people unsure what to do next, since there's less local habit around urns. Nothing about it is complicated. An urn is simply a container sized to the ashes, and you can choose one whenever you're ready.
We take the Italy rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Como, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Indoor and outdoor urns in Como's climate
If you'd like an outdoor memorial in Como and aren't sure how the seasons will treat it, pick the least fussy option: bury the ashes in a biodegradable urn and mark the place with a flat stone. There's nothing above ground to fade, crack or blow over, and you can add plants around it as you learn how that spot behaves through the year.

What families in Como typically pay for an urn
We haven't found published pet urn price lists for Italy that we can cite yet, so we won't guess at local prices. What we can show is the closest honest comparison: a UK crematorium's published caskets run £61–£151[5], and US guides put wooden pet urns at $30–$150[3]. Most pet crematoria in Como sell their own range, so ask for a written price that includes engraving.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Lombardy: Lombardy costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Scattering and burial rules in Lombardy
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Lombardy.
In Italy, pet crematoria usually offer urns with an individual cremation, and many families keep the ashes at home. Local rules on scattering vary between regions and comuni, so check before scattering in a public place. Urns are sized in litres, and ceramic urns from Italian makers are a popular choice.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Talk to the family first. Find out who wants a small share, and whether some ashes are going into the ground or the wind.
- Set aside the shares first, and fill the main urn with what remains; the ashes sharing planner works out each person's portion.
- Buy matching keepsakes for family living elsewhere, and deliver them face to face rather than by mail where possible.
- If you must post ashes, read your carrier's rules before packing. USPS is the only US service that takes them, and only via Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn last, after the shares are out, sized to what remains.
- Plan any scattering for a calm, dry day, and keep a little back in case someone wants to join later.
Small ways to keep your pet's memory close
On 2 November many Como families visit relatives' graves, and some quietly add a pet's photo or a candle at home the same day. A small urn beside family pictures, a potted plant on the balcony or a stone at the foot of a garden wall can become part of that yearly moment. Let the memorial fit your household's customs, whatever they are.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Como actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Milan, about 24 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Como and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Como page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Como?
The closest communities we cover are Milan (about 24 miles), Turin (about 85 miles) and Verona (about 96 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Como too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I bury my pet's urn in my yard in Lombardy?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed, and it's much simpler than burying a body. If you rent, ask your landlord; if you're in a homeowners' association, check its rules. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, consider keeping a small portion indoors in a keepsake.
How long does an engraved urn take to arrive in Como?
It depends on the seller and the work involved. Simple laser engraving on wood or brass can be quick, while photo engraving, hand-painted figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks. One Australian crematory, for example, quotes about two weeks for a laser-engraved metal urn[7]. Always ask for the making time and the shipping time separately, then add a margin if a date matters.
My vet in Como uses a crematory near Milan. Can I still choose my own urn?
Yes. You can ask for the ashes to come back in the standard container and buy any urn you like, or ask the vet for the crematory's catalog and choose from that so the ashes return already in it. Either way, there's no extra charge for simply declining an urn upgrade.
