Pet Urns in the Netherlands: what to know
In the Netherlands, most families first see urns at the pet crematory, which usually offers a small range with its private cremation service. You're never obliged to buy one there. Many people take the ashes home in the temporary container and choose an urn later from an online seller or a local maker.
Pet urns in the Netherlands follow the same basic choices as anywhere: size, material, personalization and where the urn will live. What differs from country to country is who sells them, how they're sized (cubic inches or litres), how long delivery takes and which rules apply to scattering and burying ashes. This page covers the Netherlands as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

Cremation customs in the Netherlands and your pet
Cremation is common but not universal in the Netherlands, where about 68.37%[1] of people are cremated. Pet crematories here usually sell a solid core range of urns rather than a huge catalog, so families who want something unusual, like a figurine or a marble urn, often buy online. The local range is still worth seeing first, since those urns are chosen to fit the ashes that crematory returns.

What pet urns cost in the Netherlands
In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[2].
Keepsakes are where European families in the Netherlands most often overspend without meaning to. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake can cost ~1.34×[3] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same seller, because small pieces carry the same handling and engraving costs. We can't cite local euro prices yet; for a benchmark, a pendant made with pet ashes costs £170[4] at a UK glass studio. Decide how many keepsakes you truly need before ordering.
| Urn | Published price | Market |
|---|---|---|
| Pet ashes casket | £61–£151[5] | United Kingdom |
| Wooden pet urn | $30–$150[6] | United States |
| Marble or stone pet urn | $80–$300[7] | United States |
| Keepsake or mini urn | $15–$60[8] | United States |

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, pet crematoria (dierencrematoria) usually offer urns with the cremation, and some let you stay while it happens and take the ashes home the same day in an urn you've chosen. Urns are sized in litres. Scattering on your own land is common, and many families keep a little back in a keepsake.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, rather than being handed it at reception when you're least able to think.
- Choose while your pet is still with you, should that feel bearable; some people find deciding calmly beforehand kinder.
- Size the urn from their weight at their best, and allow a little room so the sealed bag slides in easily.
- Tell the crematory which urn you've picked and ask them to place the ashes in it before they're returned.
- Leave the engraving until the dates are final. An engraved plate can always be attached a couple of weeks afterwards.
- Plan who will collect the urn, or who will be home to sign for it if it's delivered.
Keeping your pet close in the Netherlands
For some families, the most meaningful memorial is a living one: a tree planted with a biodegradable urn, a rose bed in the garden or a bench somewhere your pet loved. You can combine one with an indoor urn by setting aside a portion of the ashes first. Our guide to ash volume, temporary containers and shares explains how shares are usually packed.

Questions people ask
Do crematories in the Netherlands sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in the Netherlands?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in the Netherlands?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in the Netherlands?
No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
How can our family share a pet's ashes across the Netherlands?
Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[8] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in the Netherlands?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
