Pet Urns in Andalusia: what to know
Across the 4 Andalusia communities we cover, from Seville, Malaga and Granada to smaller towns, the urn market looks broadly similar: crematory ranges of wood, ceramic and metal, plus online and local makers for anything more personal. What changes is delivery time, the chance to see an urn in person and, in some places, the climate an outdoor memorial has to survive.
In Andalusia, as elsewhere, the urn is often the memorial families keep longest, sometimes for decades. That's a good reason not to rush it. Choose a material you'll still like in ten years, a lid that closes securely and a size close to the ashes you have. If you'd like a second opinion, send us your pet's details and we'll email some options.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
Roughly 50.11%[1] of people in Andalusia are cremated, and the share has been rising for years. As cremation grows, so does the habit of keeping ashes at home. In national research on human cremation, 37%[2] of Americans said they would keep cremated remains at home in an urn. Many pet owners feel the same pull to keep a companion close.
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) publishes the Andalusia rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
How much to budget for an urn
Keepsakes are where European families in Andalusia most often overspend without meaning to. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake can cost ~1.34×[3] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same seller, because small pieces carry the same handling and engraving costs. We can't cite local euro prices yet; for a benchmark, a pendant made with pet ashes costs £170[4] at a UK glass studio. Decide how many keepsakes you truly need before ordering.
Urns in Spain are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[5] at one crematorium.

What Andalusia allows with pet ashes
Rules about pet ashes are about places, not containers. The urn you choose, whether it's engraved and how long you keep it are entirely your call. What follows for Andalusia covers where scattering and burial are generally accepted, so you can plan any outdoor part of the memorial without worrying.
In Spain, pet cremation with an urn is widely available through vets and crematorios de mascotas, and many families keep the ashes at home. Scattering rules are set locally, so check with your ayuntamiento before scattering in a public place. Urns are sized in litres.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Tell your child the ashes are coming home and what they'll look like: a sealed bag in a plain box or tin.
- Let them help choose, from two or three urns you've already checked for size and price.
- Offer a small keepsake of their own for their room, while the main urn stays in a shared space.
- Invite them to add something: a drawing or a short note can be tucked under the base.
- Pick a lid that screws or locks shut, especially if the urn will sit within reach of small hands.
- Mark the day the urn arrives with a moment together, such as lighting a candle or telling a favorite story.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
For some families, the most meaningful memorial is a living one: a tree planted with a biodegradable urn, a rose bed in the garden or a bench somewhere your pet loved. You can combine one with an indoor urn by setting aside a portion of the ashes first. Our guide to ash volume, temporary containers and shares explains how shares are usually packed.

Questions people ask
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Andalusia choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Andalusia?
It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Andalusia?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Andalusia?
No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
How many communities do you cover in Andalusia?
We currently have local pet urn guides for 4 communities in Andalusia, including Seville, Malaga and Granada. Each page covers local price ranges, delivery and engraving timing, climate tips for indoor and outdoor urns, and the basic rules for scattering and burial.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Andalusia?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
