In Spain, most families first see urns at the pet crematory, which usually offers a small range with its private cremation service. You're never obliged to buy one there. Many people take the ashes home in the temporary container and choose an urn later from an online seller or a local maker.
Families in Spain are often surprised that the ashes return quickly, while the urn they want takes longer than hoped. That gap is normal. The temporary container is made to hold the ashes safely for as long as needed, so use the wait to choose calmly rather than settling for whatever happens to be in stock.

In Spain, about 50.11%[1] of people are cremated. That middle-ground rate means many families are choosing an urn for the first time, with no older relative's urn to copy. If that's you, start simple: know the capacity you need, decide whether it's for display or for burial and give yourself time. The cremation figure for Spain comes from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
We haven't found published pet urn price lists for Spain that we can cite yet, so we won't guess at local prices. What we can show is the closest honest comparison: a UK crematorium's published caskets run £61–£151[2], and US guides put wooden pet urns at $30–$150[3]. Most pet crematoria in Spain sell their own range, so ask for a written price that includes engraving.
Keepsakes are where European families in Spain most often overspend without meaning to. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake can cost ~1.34×[4] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same seller, because small pieces carry the same handling and engraving costs. We can't cite local euro prices yet; for a benchmark, a pendant made with pet ashes costs £170[5] at a UK glass studio. Decide how many keepsakes you truly need before ordering.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Spain.
In Spain, pet cremation with an urn is widely available through vets and crematorios de mascotas, and many families keep the ashes at home. Scattering rules are set locally, so check with your ayuntamiento before scattering in a public place. Urns are sized in litres.
Step by step in Spain
- Talk to the family first. Agree who would like a keepsake and whether any ashes will be scattered or buried.
- Set aside the shares before filling the main urn; the ashes sharing planner shows how much each person can have.
- Buy matching keepsakes for family living elsewhere, and deliver them face to face rather than by mail where possible.
- If you must post ashes, check your postal service's rules first. In the US, only USPS accepts them, by Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn last, after the shares are out, sized to what remains.
- Plan any scattering for a calm, dry day, and keep a little back in case someone wants to join later.
Small ways to keep your pet's memory close

Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Spain?
Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Spain and winter lows near °F in Spain, the right choice depends on where you are.
Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Spain?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.

Do crematories in Spain sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
Which places in Spain have the widest choice of pet urns?
Usually the largest cities, such as Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, where crematories keep display ranges and independent makers and engravers are easier to find. Smaller towns rely more on the vet clinic's catalog and on delivery from online shops. If you'd like to see urns in person, a trip to the nearest large city can be worth it for stone or glass.
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Spain choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
