Pet Urns in Asturias: what to know
Across the 1 Asturias communities we cover, from Oviedo to smaller towns, the urn market looks broadly similar: crematory ranges of wood, ceramic and metal, plus online and local makers for anything more personal. What changes is delivery time, the chance to see an urn in person and, in some places, the climate an outdoor memorial has to survive.
Weather varies a lot across Asturias, and it matters for any urn kept outdoors or any plan to bury or scatter ashes. In the hottest places, summer highs reach about °F, enough to fade wood and printed photos in direct sun. In the coldest, winter lows average °F, cold enough to crack porous ceramic left outside and freeze the ground for burial.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
Cremation accounts for about 50.11%[1] of deaths in Asturias. Because it isn't yet everyone's default, local memorial shops may carry only a few pet designs. That's no reason to settle. Take the capacity you need and a photo of the spot where the urn will go, and you'll soon see whether the local range fits or whether to look further.
That Asturias rate is a human statistic published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
In much of Europe, the pet crematorium is also the main urn seller, and it usually offers a small range with the cremation. Published European urn prices are scarce, so the table below shows sourced UK and US figures for comparison rather than local ones. Relative prices hold up across markets: marble tends to cost about three times as much as ceramic[2].
Keepsakes are where European families in Asturias most often overspend without meaning to. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake can cost ~1.34×[3] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same seller, because small pieces carry the same handling and engraving costs. We can't cite local euro prices yet; for a benchmark, a pendant made with pet ashes costs £170[4] at a UK glass studio. Decide how many keepsakes you truly need before ordering.
| Urn | Published price | Market |
|---|---|---|
| Pet ashes casket | £61–£151[5] | United Kingdom |
| Wooden pet urn | $30–$150[6] | United States |
| Marble or stone pet urn | $80–$300[7] | United States |
| Keepsake or mini urn | $15–$60[8] | United States |

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Asturias
Nobody needs a permit to keep an urn on a shelf. Permission only comes into it once part of the ashes goes somewhere shared, such as a park, a beach, a river or a cemetery. Before any of that, find out who looks after the place you have in mind, since the answer usually comes from them rather than from a single law. The general picture for Asturias is below.
In Spain, pet cremation with an urn is widely available through vets and crematorios de mascotas, and many families keep the ashes at home. Scattering rules are set locally, so check with your ayuntamiento before scattering in a public place. Urns are sized in litres.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Bring the ashes home as they are. The temporary container is sealed and safe; there's no deadline for moving them.
- Weigh up how many people want a share. Before any order goes in, settle whether a spouse, a grown child living elsewhere or a grandparent would like a portion.
- Work out the capacity you need. The rule of thumb is one cubic inch for every pound your pet weighed when well; the urn size calculator does the sum for you.
- Choose the material for the room it will live in. A warm room suits wood, a colorful one ceramic; brass fits a narrow shelf and stone lasts longest.
- Approve a written proof of any engraving, and check the spelling of your pet's name twice.
- Move the ashes in their sealed bag without opening it, or have the crematory place them in the urn on your behalf.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials
Some families in Asturias put together a small memorial shelf: the urn, a framed photo, a paw print and the tag from their pet's collar. It becomes a place to stop for a moment rather than a shrine. If you'd like a paw print and didn't get one before the cremation, a photo-engraved paw design on the urn itself is a gentle alternative.

Questions people ask
What size urn does my pet need?
Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[10]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.
Do crematories in Asturias sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Asturias choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
How can our family share a pet's ashes across Asturias?
Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[8] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Asturias?
Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.
What should I ask a crematory in Asturias about urns?
Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
