Pet Urns in Vaud: what to know
Across Vaud, one question comes up more often than price or material: what to do when people in the family want different things. One wants the ashes at home, another wants them scattered, a third wants a pendant. The answer is usually all three. Keep the shares small, write down who has what and choose the main urn last.
Across the 1 Vaud communities we cover, from Lausanne to smaller towns, the urn market looks broadly similar: crematory ranges of wood, ceramic and metal, plus online and local makers for anything more personal. What changes is delivery time, the chance to see an urn in person and, in some places, the climate an outdoor memorial has to survive.

Why urns are common in Vaud
Cremation is now the mainstream choice in Vaud, where about 90%[1] of people are cremated. In places like this, the urn has become the main memorial for many families, taking the place a headstone once held. That's worth remembering when you choose one for a pet: it may be on a shelf for twenty years, so pick something you'll still like, rather than something that only suits this week.
bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) publishes the Vaud rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Pet urn and engraving prices for Vaud
We haven't found published pet urn price lists for Switzerland that we can cite yet, so we won't guess at local prices. What we can show is the closest honest comparison: a UK crematorium's published caskets run £61–£151[2], and US guides put wooden pet urns at $30–$150[3]. Most pet crematoria in Vaud sell their own range, so ask for a written price that includes engraving.
Urns in Switzerland are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[2] at one crematorium.

Scattering and burial rules in Vaud
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Vaud.
Step by step in Vaud
- Let the cremation happen first. Choosing an urn can wait weeks; there's no reason it has to be decided in the hours after losing your pet.
- Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, where possible: a lock of fur or their collar might become part of a keepsake down the line.
- Write down your pet's healthy weight, not the weight after a long illness, since urn capacity is worked out from it.
- When the ashes arrive, check the label on the bag or box shows your pet's name, then set it somewhere quiet.
- Look at urns slowly, with your pet's weight to hand for the capacity check, and shortlist no more than three.
- Order when you feel settled, not because a countdown on a website says a discount is ending.
Remembering your pet, in Vaud and beyond
If you have other pets, or may do in the future, think about how their urns will sit together one day. Many families choose a simple design they can match later, so a shelf of two or three urns looks like it belongs together. A local woodworker or a long-established seller is the easiest way to keep the match.

Questions people ask
Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Vaud?
No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
Do crematories in Vaud sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Vaud?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
What size urn does my pet need?
Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[7]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.
Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Vaud?
Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Vaud and winter lows near °F in Vaud, the right choice depends on where you are.
Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Vaud?
It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.
