Pet Urns in Switzerland

Pet Urns in Switzerland: what to know

Pet urns in Switzerland follow the same basic choices as anywhere: size, material, personalization and where the urn will live. What differs from country to country is who sells them, how they're sized (cubic inches or litres), how long delivery takes and which rules apply to scattering and burying ashes. This page covers Switzerland as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

If you're in Switzerland and trying to work out what to spend, start with the prices a local crematory publishes and compare them with the delivered, engraved price of any urn you like online. Our city pages list sourced price ranges and the questions worth asking before you order.

We cover 8 communities in Switzerland, from Zurich, Geneva and Basel to smaller towns.

Cremation customs in Switzerland and your pet

Cremation is now the mainstream choice in Switzerland, where about 90%[1] of people are cremated. In places like this, the urn has become the main memorial for many families, taking the place a headstone once held. That's worth remembering when you choose one for a pet: it may be on a shelf for twenty years, so pick something you'll still like, rather than something that only suits this week.

bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) publishes the Switzerland rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

How much to budget for an urn

Keepsakes are where European families in Switzerland most often overspend without meaning to. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake can cost ~1.34×[2] as much as a full-size wooden urn at the same seller, because small pieces carry the same handling and engraving costs. We can't cite local euro prices yet; for a benchmark, a pendant made with pet ashes costs £170[3] at a UK glass studio. Decide how many keepsakes you truly need before ordering.

Urns in Switzerland are usually sized in litres, which makes online shopping easier if you know the conversion: one litre is about 61 cubic inches. Ordering from outside the EU can add customs charges and delays, so a local maker or your local crematorium may work out cheaper overall. For a rough benchmark, UK pet caskets cost £61–£151[4] at one crematorium.

Before you scatter or bury in Switzerland

Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for Switzerland follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.

Step by step in Switzerland

  1. Let the cremation happen first. Choosing an urn can wait weeks; there's no reason it has to be decided in the hours after losing your pet.
  2. Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, if you can: a clipping of fur or the collar can go into a keepsake later.
  3. Write down your pet's healthy weight, not the weight after a long illness, since urn capacity is worked out from it.
  4. When the ashes arrive, check the label carries your pet's name before putting the box or bag in a calm corner of the house.
  5. Look at urns slowly, with your pet's weight to hand for the capacity check, and shortlist no more than three.
  6. Order when you feel settled, and ignore any timer on a product page warning that a sale ends soon.

Small ways to keep your pet's memory close

The urn can keep changing after day one. Some families add a second plate a year later with a line they couldn't write at first, or a photo from a last good summer. If you think you might, choose an urn with a flat face or a recessed panel where a plate can be fixed without drilling. If you'd like a print of a paw as well, the paw print kit chooser compares ink, clay and casting kits.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Switzerland?

Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.

What size urn does my pet need?

Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[9]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.

Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Switzerland?

No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.

How can our family share a pet's ashes across Switzerland?

Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[7] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.

Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Switzerland?

Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Switzerland and winter lows near °F in Switzerland, the right choice depends on where you are.

How much does a pet urn cost in Switzerland?

Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[4]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.
