Cremation customs in England and your pet
In England, about 83.0%[5] of people are cremated, so most families already have a view on urns: whether they like them on display, prefer to scatter, or split the difference. Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in England.
In the UK, you can keep your pet's ashes at home, scatter them on your own land or bury them in a pet cemetery. Scattering on someone else's land needs the landowner's permission. Urns and caskets here are often sized in litres or millilitres, and Royal Mail lists ashes among its prohibited items, so most families hand-deliver keepsakes or use a specialist courier.

How to get from ashes to urn
- Give yourself a week or two before choosing. The first days are rarely the best time for design decisions.
