Pet Urns in the United Kingdom: what to know
Sharing ashes between family members in different cities is a common part of choosing an urn in the United Kingdom. Most families set aside small shares in matching keepsakes first, then choose the main urn for what's left. Carrying keepsakes in person is simplest; posting ashes has its own rules, which vary by carrier.
Buying a pet urn in the United Kingdom is easier than it used to be, with crematory ranges, online sellers and independent makers all delivering nationwide. The trade-offs are delivery time and the risk of damage in transit. Solid wood and metal travel best; ceramic and glass need careful packing.

How we calculated this
The sum of our per-city estimates for the 40 communities in the United Kingdom on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

Why urns are common in the United Kingdom
With cremation at roughly 83.0%[1] in the United Kingdom, many families here have already scattered a relative somewhere meaningful. That experience often shapes what they do for a pet: part of the ashes kept indoors, the rest returned to a beach, a trail or a garden. If that's your plan, buy the urn after the scattering, so it's sized for what's left.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
UK urn prices are less well documented than US ones, so the table below mixes the UK figures we could source with a keepsake example. For a wider sense of how materials compare, US price guides are a reasonable guide in relative terms: marble costs about three times as much as ceramic[2], and wood sits between the two. Ask any seller in the United Kingdom for the capacity in litres or millilitres.
When a vet near the United Kingdom arranges the cremation, the casket usually arrives as part of a package. In the Competition and Markets Authority's review of vet services, only 52%[3] of pet cremation buyers recalled being given prices for the service and its packages. So ask for the casket and urn choices in writing, with prices, before you agree. At one UK crematorium, caskets cost £61–£151[4], and you're free to decline them and buy your own later.
| Item | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Pet ashes casket (bamboo to cast resin) | £61–£151[4] | UK pet crematorium, including VAT |
| Glass pendant containing ashes | £170[5] | Glass studio in Bath, England |
| Burying ashes in a pet cemetery | £60–£145[6] | Unattended or attended, Sussex |
| Pet cemetery plot (full burial) | £200–£800+[7] | Depends on location and size |

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Nobody needs a permit to keep an urn on a shelf. Permission only comes into it once part of the ashes goes somewhere shared, such as a park, a beach, a river or a cemetery. Before any of that, find out who looks after the place you have in mind, since the answer usually comes from them rather than from a single law. The general picture for the United Kingdom is below.
In the UK, you can keep your pet's ashes at home, scatter them on your own land or bury them in a pet cemetery. Scattering on someone else's land needs the landowner's permission. Urns and caskets here are often sized in litres or millilitres, and Royal Mail lists ashes among its prohibited items, so most families hand-deliver keepsakes or use a specialist courier.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Ask what came with the cremation. Many packages include a basic urn, and some let you upgrade for the difference.
- Check how the ashes came back. Most are in a sealed bag inside a box or tin; note its size before measuring any urn.
- Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
- Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, especially if a date matters.
- Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
- Place it out of direct sun, well clear of radiators, somewhere steady and high enough that neither a child nor another pet can get to it.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Children often want something of their own to hold. A small keepsake urn on a bedside table, or a soft photo cushion, can help a child in the United Kingdom feel included without keeping the main urn in their room. Let them help choose it, or write something to go inside the urn's base.

Questions people ask
Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of the United Kingdom?
It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.
How much does a pet urn cost in the United Kingdom?
Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[4]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.
How many dog- and cat-owning homes are there across the United Kingdom?
By our estimate, about 6,015,000 households across the United Kingdom communities we cover have a dog or cat. It's a rough figure from census household counts and national ownership surveys, but it shows why most crematories and memorial sellers here offer a range of urns and keepsakes.
What should I ask a crematory in the United Kingdom about urns?
Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in the United Kingdom?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?
Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in the United Kingdom choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
