Pet Urns in Wales: what to know

Families in Wales are often spread across several cities, and that makes sharing ashes a common question. A set of matching keepsake urns lets a sibling or grown child in another town keep a portion. Handing them over in person is simplest; posting ashes comes with rules that vary by country and carrier. Our city pages cover the local details.

Across Wales, two things shape the urn you choose more than anything else: where it will live and how far it has to travel. Apartment dwellers in the cities tend to pick compact urns with secure lids; families on larger properties often split the ashes between an indoor urn and a garden burial. Distance matters for delivery, especially for fragile ceramic and glass.

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 2 communities in Wales on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

How Wales thinks about cremation and urns

About 80.46%[1] of people in Wales are cremated, one of the higher rates around. A high cremation rate means a well-developed market for urns: more sellers, more materials and more local engravers who've done it before. For pet owners, that mostly means choice and competition, so it's worth comparing a crematory's counter price with an online maker's delivered price before deciding.

Source for the Wales figure: Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025). It describes human funerals and is here as context, not as a count of pets.

Pet urn and engraving prices for Wales

UK urn prices are less well documented than US ones, so the table below mixes the UK figures we could source with a keepsake example. For a wider sense of how materials compare, US price guides are a reasonable guide in relative terms: marble costs about three times as much as ceramic[2], and wood sits between the two. Ask any seller in Wales for the capacity in litres or millilitres.

If you're in Wales and weighing a glass keepsake instead of a second urn, UK studios price them clearly: one charges £170[3] for a pet-ashes glass pendant. Caskets from a crematorium run £61–£151[4] at one provider. Together they cover what most families need: a main casket for home and a small piece for whoever wants to carry a part of their pet.

Pet ashes and the law in Wales

If you'd like to bury the urn itself, the material matters for more than looks. A biodegradable urn breaks down within a few seasons, while metal, resin or sealed hardwood stays intact for years, which some cemeteries and landowners prefer and others don't accept. Check before you order. The notes below summarize Wales.

In the UK, you can keep your pet's ashes at home, scatter them on your own land or bury them in a pet cemetery. Scattering on someone else's land needs the landowner's permission. Urns and caskets here are often sized in litres or millilitres, and Royal Mail lists ashes among its prohibited items, so most families hand-deliver keepsakes or use a specialist courier.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

From temporary container to urn

  1. Talk to the family first. Find out who wants a small share, and whether some ashes are going into the ground or the wind.
  2. Set aside the shares first, and fill the main urn with what remains; the ashes sharing planner works out each person's portion.
  3. Buy matching keepsakes for relatives in other cities, and hand them over in person where you can.
  4. If you must post ashes, check your postal service's rules first. In the US, only USPS accepts them, by Priority Mail Express.
  5. Choose the main urn last, after the shares are out, sized to what remains.
  6. Plan any scattering for still, dry weather, and hold a small amount in reserve for anyone who asks to take part afterwards.

Sharing a pet's memory across the family

Children often want something of their own to hold. A small keepsake urn on a bedside table, or a soft photo cushion, can help a child in Wales feel included without keeping the main urn in their room. Let them help choose it, or write something to go inside the urn's base.

If Wales is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

What size urn does my pet need?

Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[8]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.

Do crematories in Wales sell urns?

Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.

How much does a pet urn cost in Wales?

Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[4]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.

Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Wales?

Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.

Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Wales?

Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around °F in Wales and winter lows near °F in Wales, the right choice depends on where you are.

How many dog- and cat-owning homes are there across Wales?

By our estimate, about 220,000 households across the Wales communities we cover have a dog or cat. It's a rough figure from census household counts and national ownership surveys, but it shows why most crematories and memorial sellers here offer a range of urns and keepsakes.
