An urn for your pet, in Swansea
By our estimate, about 74,000 households in Swansea share their home with a dog or cat, and roughly 6,000 of those pets die each year. Many of their ashes come home needing an urn. Here's how to choose one well.

Pet urns in Swansea: the local picture
Choosing a memorial slowly is common and sensible. Most Swansea families bring ashes home in a simple container, and only later decide whether they want a decorative urn, jewellery, a stone or a tree. Waiting lets you ask relatives whether they'd like a small share of the ashes, compare makers properly and choose something that will still feel right in ten years' time.
The sea is a strong pull in Swansea, and some families want a memorial connected to the bay or the Gower coast. Water-soluble urns are designed for scattering at sea, and ashes can also be scattered on land with the owner's permission. If you'd rather have something permanent, a memorial stone with a line of Welsh or English, or a tree planted at home, gives you a place to return to.
In a place the size of Swansea, you'll usually find one or two pet crematories and a handful of vet clinics that return ashes, each with a small range of urns. That covers the basics well: wooden boxes, ceramic jars and a few metal designs. For marble, sculpted figurines or photo urns, most families here order online or look to a larger centre such as Cardiff, where specialist makers are more common.
Swansea is home to about 246,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Wales communities we cover. Cardiff, roughly 34 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Swansea run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Cardiff (34 miles), Bristol (59 miles) and Exeter (65 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
74,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Swansea has (estimate)
How we calculated this
246,000 ÷ 2.4 = 102,500 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 74,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
6,000
Swansea families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
74,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 6,000 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Cremation in United Kingdom, and what it means for urns
With cremation at roughly 80.46%[5] in United Kingdom, many families here have already scattered a relative somewhere meaningful. That experience often shapes what they do for a pet: part of the ashes kept indoors, the rest returned to a beach, a trail or a garden. If that's your plan, buy the urn after the scattering, so it's sized for what's left.
The United Kingdom percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Swansea, not as a count of pets.
Timing a burial or scattering in Swansea
Wherever you live, the room the urn sits in matters more than the weather outside. Bathrooms and kitchens bring steam and grease, and a spot beside an outside door catches drafts. A shelf in a bedroom, study or living room, out of direct sunlight, keeps most urns looking the way they did the day they arrived.

What pet urns cost in Swansea
UK pet crematoria publish casket and urn prices more often than you might expect. One provider lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[6] including VAT, from a bamboo box to a cast-resin breed figure. A crematorium serving Swansea will usually offer a similar range with its individual cremation service, and you're free to buy elsewhere and keep the ashes in the standard container until your urn arrives.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Wales: Wales costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Wales allows with pet ashes
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Wales.
In the UK, you can keep your pet's ashes at home, scatter them on your own land or bury them in a pet cemetery. Scattering on someone else's land needs the landowner's permission. Urns and caskets here are often sized in litres or millilitres, and Royal Mail lists ashes among its prohibited items, so most families hand-deliver keepsakes or use a specialist courier.
Start with the Wales rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Swansea's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Decide whether each pet gets its own urn or whether you'd like a matching set that grows over the years.
- Pick a design that will still be made later, ideally one a nearby craftsperson could reproduce, if future urns need to match.
- Size each urn for one pet; buying a companion urn for two is best left until you actually have both sets of ashes.
- Label the base of every urn with a name and dates, even if the front is engraved, so they're never mixed up.
- Leave shelf space beside the first urn so a later one can join it without rearranging the room.
- File each crematory certificate with its urn, in an envelope taped underneath or kept together in a drawer.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Many Swansea homes are terraces with small back gardens, while newer houses on the city's edges often have more space. That shapes memorial choices: a small plaque or stone suits a compact garden, a slim urn fits a shelf in a terraced front room, and jewellery or a paw print keepsake needs no space at all. If you might move house one day, something portable is worth considering.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Cardiff to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Cardiff (roughly 34 miles from Swansea) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Swansea?
Usually yes. Cardiff is about 34 miles away, Bristol is about 59 miles away and Exeter is about 65 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Swansea each year?
Our estimate is around 6,000. It comes from Swansea's population (about 246,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 74,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Why does the Swansea page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025) reports about 80.46%[5] of United Kingdom residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
Do I have to buy the casket my vet offers in Swansea?
No. You can ask for the ashes back in the crematorium's standard container and choose a casket or urn elsewhere. The Competition and Markets Authority found that 78%[8] of UK cremation buyers bought through, or on the recommendation of, their vet, so it's easy to feel there's no other option. Ask for the casket prices in writing and take your time.
