Before you scatter or bury in Scotland
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Scotland.
In the UK, you can keep your pet's ashes at home, scatter them on your own land or bury them in a pet cemetery. Scattering on someone else's land needs the landowner's permission. Urns and caskets here are often sized in litres or millilitres, and Royal Mail lists ashes among its prohibited items, so most families hand-deliver keepsakes or use a specialist courier.

How to get from ashes to urn
- Let the cremation happen first. Choosing an urn can wait weeks; there's no reason it has to be decided in the hours after losing your pet.
- Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, if you can: a clipping of fur or the collar can go into a keepsake later.
- Write down your pet's healthy weight, not the weight after a long illness, since urn capacity is worked out from it.
- When the ashes arrive, check the label on the bag or box shows your pet's name, then set it somewhere quiet.
- Look at urns slowly, keeping the weight figure nearby for the capacity check, then narrow the field to three at most.
- Order when you feel settled, and ignore any timer on a product page warning that a sale ends soon.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
If you have other pets, or may do in the future, think about how their urns will sit together one day. Many families choose a simple design they can match later, so a shelf of two or three urns looks like it belongs together. How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Scotland?
It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Scotland?
No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.
What size urn does my pet need?

Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Scotland?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
