Buying an urn locally or online in Portsmouth
The sea runs through Portsmouth's identity, and some families want a memorial connected to the Solent or the Southsea shoreline. Water-soluble urns are made for scattering at sea, and it's worth choosing a calm day and thinking about tides. If you'd prefer something to visit, a planted tree or rose bush in a garden, perhaps a relative's, gives you a place that grows over time.
Portsmouth's terraced houses usually have small back yards, and many residents live in flats. That makes compact memorials popular: a small urn on a mantelpiece, a framed paw print, or cremation jewellery that holds a little ash. If you have outdoor space, a slim memorial stone or a plaque set into a planter can fit even a tiny courtyard garden without taking over.
One local option that Portsmouth families often overlook is the trophy or awards shop. Many of them laser-engrave brass plates and wooden panels, and some will engrave an urn you already own. That can be quicker and cheaper than sending an urn back to the seller, and you can check the proof in person. Bring the spelling of your pet's name written down, and ask to see a sample on the same material first.
With roughly 238,000 residents, Portsmouth is the 16th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Southampton, about 15 miles (24 km) away, which is where some providers serving Portsmouth are based.
Portsmouth sits within easy reach of Southampton (15 miles), Winchester (19 miles) and Guildford (37 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Portsmouth; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
71,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Portsmouth has (estimate)
How we calculated this
238,000 ÷ 2.4 = 99,167 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 71,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
5,800

How we calculated this
71,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 5,800 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
With cremation at roughly 83.0%[5] in England, many families here have already scattered a relative somewhere meaningful. That experience often shapes what they do for a pet: part of the ashes kept indoors, the rest returned to a beach, a trail or a garden. If that's your plan, buy the urn after the scattering, so it's sized for what's left.
That England rate is a human one, published by Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). We quote it for Portsmouth only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Portsmouth
If you'd like an outdoor memorial in Portsmouth and aren't sure how the seasons will treat it, pick the least fussy option: bury the ashes in a biodegradable urn and mark the place with a flat stone. There's nothing above ground to fade, crack or blow over, and you can add plants around it as you learn how that spot behaves through the year.

How much to budget for an urn
In the UK, most families collect ashes in a simple scatter tube or casket from the crematorium, then decide about an urn later. Published casket prices run £61–£151[6] at one provider. If you'd like the ashes in a pet cemetery instead, one Sussex cemetery charges £60–£145[7] to bury them, unattended or attended, which can be a lovely alternative to a shelf urn.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for England: England costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you scatter or bury in England
Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for England follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.
In the UK, you can keep your pet's ashes at home, scatter them on your own land or bury them in a pet cemetery. Scattering on someone else's land needs the landowner's permission. Urns and caskets here are often sized in litres or millilitres, and Royal Mail lists ashes among its prohibited items, so most families hand-deliver keepsakes or use a specialist courier.
For England's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the England guide. Local rules in Portsmouth can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, rather than being handed it at reception when you're least able to think.
- Choose while your pet is still with you, should that feel bearable; some people find deciding calmly beforehand kinder.
- Size the urn from their weight at their best, then add a small margin so the bag goes in without forcing.
- Tell the crematory which urn you've picked and ask them to place the ashes in it before they're returned.
- Leave the engraving until the dates are final. An engraved plate can always be attached a couple of weeks afterwards.
- Plan who will collect the urn, or who will be home to sign for it if it's delivered.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
You don't have to decide on a memorial in the first few days. Most Portsmouth families bring ashes home in a simple container and choose something lasting later. That time lets you ask whether relatives would like a share in a keepsake urn or jewellery, look properly at materials and quality, and settle on something that will still feel right in years to come.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Portsmouth?
By our estimate, about 71,500 households in Portsmouth have at least one dog or cat, and around 5,800 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 238,000, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How do England attitudes to cremation compare?
Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) puts the England human cremation rate at about 83.0%[5]. We show it on the Portsmouth page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Where are the providers that serve Portsmouth actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Southampton, about 15 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Portsmouth and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Portsmouth?
Usually yes. Southampton is about 15 miles away, Winchester is about 19 miles away and Guildford is about 37 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How much does a pet urn cost in Portsmouth?
UK pet crematoria usually sell caskets alongside the cremation; one provider lists them at £61–£151[6] including VAT, from bamboo to cast resin. Specialist and commissioned urns cost more. If you'd rather bury the ashes, one Sussex pet cemetery charges £60–£145[7]. Ask any seller for the capacity in millilitres or litres.
Where in the house should a pet urn go?
A shelf in a room you use daily, shaded from strong sunlight, with no radiator, heater or steamy kitchen or bathroom close by. Put it high enough that pets and small children can't knock it down, on a surface that doesn't wobble. Many families choose a spot they pass every day; others prefer somewhere private, like a bedroom. Either is right if it feels right to you.
