Pet urns in Vail: sizes, costs and engraving
Vail has an estimated 1,600 dog- or cat-owning households. When a pet's ashes come home, the urn is often the last thing chosen and the thing kept longest. Here's how to get it right.

Choosing a pet urn in Vail
At roughly 8,000 feet, Vail's sun is intense and winters are long and deep. Outdoor memorials need to be built for that: granite, slate, bronze or heavy steel last; ceramics and resin can crack in freeze-thaw. Tree urns work only with species hardy at this elevation, so ask a local nursery before choosing one, and plant in early summer after the snow has gone.
Most Vail residents live in condos or townhomes with little or no private yard, so memorials here tend to go indoors: a slender urn beside the fireplace, a photograph, an ink impression of a paw, or a ring or pendant. Down valley, where lots are larger, a flat stone or small planting works too, provided it can sit under several feet of snow each winter.
Farm families around Vail sometimes need urns for animals most urn sellers don't think about: a working collie, a pair of barn cats, a much-loved goat. For larger animals, check capacity carefully, since extra-large urns are less common and cost more. For several small animals, a shelf of matching simple boxes, or a single garden memorial with the ashes buried beneath, can be easier than a separate urn for each.
With roughly 4,407 residents, Vail is the 36th-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. Denver, roughly 74 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Vail run from there.
Our pages for Aspen (39 miles), Golden (62 miles, a larger centre) and Boulder (64 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Vail as well.
Our estimate
1,600
How many dog- or cat-owning households Vail has (estimate)
How we calculated this
4,407 ÷ 2.5 = 1,763 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 1,600. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
140
dog and cat deaths per year in Vail, our estimate
How we calculated this
1,600 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 140 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How Colorado thinks about cremation and urns
Cremation is the usual choice in Colorado: about 77.4%[5] of people there are cremated. When cremation is this familiar, keeping ashes at home isn't unusual, and most people have seen an urn on a relative's shelf. That tends to carry over to pets. Families here rarely feel they need to explain why their dog's or cat's ashes live in the living room, and local crematories are used to selling urns alongside the cremation.

Keeping an urn safe through Vail's seasons
Indoor heating matters as much as the cold outside. Forced-air vents and radiators dry the air, and a wooden urn placed right next to one can shrink, crack or open at the joints. Keep wooden urns a few feet from heat sources and out of the path of hot air. Metal, stone and ceramic don't mind dry air, which is one reason they're popular in cold places.
Freeze and thaw are hard on some urn materials left outdoors. Water that seeps into unglazed ceramic, terracotta or porous stone expands when it freezes and can crack the piece over one winter. If the urn will live outside in Vail, choose granite, sealed stone or metal rated for outdoor use, or bring it indoors for the 9 coldest months.

What pet urns cost in Vail
One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[6], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[7] and metal urns $96–$265[8]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[8], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[9]. Expect Vail providers to be in the same territory.

Before you scatter or bury in Colorado
If you'd like to bury the urn itself, the material matters for more than looks. A biodegradable urn breaks down within a few seasons, while metal, resin or sealed hardwood stays intact for years, which some cemeteries and landowners prefer and others don't accept. Check before you order. The notes below summarize Colorado.
Colorado keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Vail.
Start with the Colorado rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Vail's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Let the cremation happen first. The urn can be chosen weeks later; nothing about it has to be settled on the day your pet dies.
- Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, where possible: a lock of fur or their collar might become part of a keepsake down the line.
- Write down your pet's healthy weight, meaning what they weighed before any illness took its toll, because that number sets the urn size.
- When the ashes arrive, check the label on the bag or box shows your pet's name, then set it somewhere quiet.
- Look at urns slowly, with your pet's weight to hand for the capacity check, and shortlist no more than three.
- Order when you feel settled, not because a countdown on a website says a discount is ending.
Remembering your pet, in Vail and beyond
The Gore Range is part of many Vail families' daily view, and memorial choices often lean toward it. Some carry a tiny vial of ashes in a jacket pocket on ski days or summer hikes; others set the urn on a sill facing the peaks. Scattering on public land comes with rules, so look them up before a ceremony and keep it low-key around other visitors.

Questions people ask
Why does the Vail page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 77.4%[5] of Colorado residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Vail actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Denver, about 74 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Vail and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Roughly how many pets die in Vail each year?
Our estimate is around 140. It comes from Vail's population (about 4,407), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 1,600 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Vail?
Usually yes. Aspen is about 39 miles away, Golden is about 62 miles away and Boulder is about 64 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[10]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
What should I do with the temporary container once the ashes are in the urn?
Some families recycle it; many keep it, along with the crematory's certificate or identification tag, as part of the record of what happened. If you keep the ashes in their original sealed bag inside the urn, the bag and tag often stay together anyway. There's no right answer, so keep whatever feels meaningful.
