Pet Urns in Colorado: what to know

Choosing a pet urn in Colorado starts in the same place everywhere: the ashes come home in a plain temporary container, and you decide in your own time what they'll live in. What changes across Colorado is the local choice. In the bigger cities, crematories keep display cabinets and independent makers sell at markets; in smaller towns, the vet's crematory catalog and online sellers do most of the work.

Pet urns in Colorado are mostly about practical decisions made calmly: the capacity you need, the material that suits your home and climate, and whether anyone in the family wants a keepsake. None of those decisions needs to be made in the first week. The ashes are safe in the temporary container for as long as it takes.

We cover 36 communities in Colorado, from Denver, Colorado Springs and Aurora to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Colorado: summer highs reach about 95°F in Grand Junction, while winter lows average 2°F in Vail. In 100% of the Colorado communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 36 communities in Colorado on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude

With roughly 77.4%[1] of people in Colorado cremated, the question locally isn't whether to keep ashes but how. That's where urn choice comes in. Many people here have inherited a relative's urn and have strong opinions about what they'd do differently: a smaller size, a lid that screws shut, a material that doesn't show dust. Those lessons apply just as well to a pet.

We take the Colorado percentage from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Colorado

One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about $50 to more than $1,000[2], and most of that spread comes from hand work: a sculpted figurine or a commissioned ceramic takes far longer than a laser-engraved box. Basic urns start at around $50[3]. For most Colorado families, the sweet spot is a solid wooden or ceramic urn with name engraving, well under $200 all in.

Keepsakes are cheaper than you might think, and the sets are cheaper still. Keepsake or mini pet urns typically cost $15–$60[4] (per one large retailer); one widely cited figure puts a single keepsake at about $28 and a set of six at about $115[5]. Watch out for tiny premium pieces, though: at one crematory, a 1 oz heart keepsake cost about a third more than its full-size wooden urn[6].

What Colorado allows with pet ashes

Rules about pet ashes are about places, not containers. The urn you choose, whether it's engraved and how long you keep it are entirely your call. What follows for Colorado covers where scattering and burial are generally accepted, so you can plan any outdoor part of the memorial without worrying.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Colorado local government directory.

A simple plan for the urn decision

  1. Decide whether each pet gets its own urn in its own style, or whether a coordinated set, added to as time passes, appeals more.
  2. Pick a design that will still be made later, or one a local maker can repeat, if a match matters to you.
  3. Size each urn for one pet; buying a companion urn for two is best left until you actually have both sets of ashes.
  4. Label the base of every urn with a name and dates, even if the front is engraved, so they're never mixed up.
  5. Leave shelf space next to the first urn, so that adding another later doesn't mean moving everything around.
  6. File each crematory certificate with its urn, whether that's an envelope fixed to the underside or all of them in one drawer.

Keeping your pet close in Colorado

For some families, the most meaningful memorial is a living one: a tree planted with a biodegradable urn, a rose bed in the garden or a bench somewhere your pet loved. You can combine one with an indoor urn by setting aside a portion of the ashes first. Our guide to ash volume, temporary containers and shares explains how shares are usually packed.

Questions people ask

What size urn does my pet need?

Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[16]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.

How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Colorado?

It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.

How much does a pet urn cost in Colorado?

National price guides put ceramic pet urns at $20–$100[7], wooden ones at $30–$150[8], metal at $40–$200[9] and marble or stone at $80–$300[10]. Prices across Colorado usually fall inside those ranges. Engraving and delivery add to the total, so compare the finished, delivered price.

Is there free pet loss support in Colorado?

Yes. University vet schools in the US offer free phone support: Cornell's pet loss hotline is answered by vet students with grief-counseling training, and Tufts runs a helpline too. Many local crematories and vet clinics also run support groups or keep a list of counselors. Reaching out doesn't need a reason beyond missing your pet.

Which urn materials cope best with the weather in Colorado?

Indoors, almost any urn is fine away from direct sun and heaters. Outdoors, granite, sealed stone and outdoor-rated metal handle both heat and frost; wood and unglazed ceramic don't. With summer highs around 95°F in Grand Junction and winter lows near 2°F in Vail, the right choice depends on where you are.

How can our family share a pet's ashes across Colorado?

Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[4] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
