Choosing a pet urn in Windsor
Windsor's newer neighborhoods often have covenants about front-yard features, but backyards usually offer space for a small memorial: a stone set among the perennials, a bench, a young tree. On acreage, families sometimes choose a boulder turned up from their own fields and add a simple engraved plaque. Indoors, an urn, a pawprint frame or a shadow box can sit in any room.
After the 2008 tornado stripped many of Windsor's older trees, residents rebuilt homes and replanted streets, and plenty of families here value memorials that grow: a tree, a perennial bed, a small garden with a plaque. Others prefer an urn in the house or a pendant carrying a little ash. Take the time you need; a planting can always be added in a later spring.
Online orders to Windsor and nearby rural addresses can take a few days longer than they would to a larger centre like Denver, and carriers sometimes leave parcels at a gate or a mailbox cluster. For a fragile ceramic or glass urn, that's a risk. Ask the seller how it's packed, whether you can require a signature, and whether they'll ship to your vet clinic or a local business where someone signs for it.
About 43,840 people live in Windsor, which makes it the 22nd-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Denver, about 51 miles (82 km) away, which is where some providers serving Windsor are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Greeley (9 miles, a larger centre), Loveland (10 miles) and Fort Collins (12 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
16,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Windsor
How we calculated this
43,840 ÷ 2.5 = 17,536 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 16,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,350
Estimated dog and cat losses in Windsor each year
How we calculated this
16,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,350 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation in Colorado, and what it means for urns
About 77.4%[5] of people in Colorado are cremated, one of the higher rates around. A high cremation rate means a well-developed market for urns: more sellers, more materials and more local engravers who've done it before. For pet owners, that mostly means choice and competition, so it's worth comparing a crematory's counter price with an online maker's delivered price before deciding.
The Colorado percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Windsor, not as a count of pets.
Indoor and outdoor urns in Windsor's climate
If you've chosen a biodegradable urn for planting, winter is a time to wait. Paper, salt and plant-fiber urns are made to break down, so keep them somewhere dry indoors until the ground thaws. In Windsor, that usually means planting after January has passed and the soil can be worked. The memorial budget planner can help you plan the tree and the urn together.
Windsor winters bring average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. If you'd like to bury your pet's ashes in the garden, frozen ground may mean waiting until spring. That's fine: the ashes are safe indoors in the temporary container or the urn, and many families find a spring burial, with the first flowers coming up, a gentler moment than a cold graveside in January.

What pet urns cost in Windsor
One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[6], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[7] and metal urns $96–$265[8]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[8], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[9]. Expect Windsor providers to be in the same territory.

Scattering and burial rules in Colorado
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Colorado.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Colorado level first; our Colorado rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Windsor or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Give yourself a week or two before choosing. The first days are rarely the best time for design decisions.
- Picture where the urn will sit, then measure the space: shelf depth, height under a cabinet, width on a mantelpiece.
- Estimate the ashes. Roughly 3-5% of body weight[11] comes back as cremated remains; for a figure based on your own pet, try the ashes weight estimator.
- Decide on personalization, whether dates and a name, a photo, a paw impression or a plain surface.
- Order the main urn and any keepsakes together, then each piece shares one finish.
- Transfer the ashes over a tray, windows shut and no draft, and only if the bag really won't pass through the opening.
- Keep the crematory's certificate or label close by, slipped under the base or filed in a drawer in the same room.
Remembering your pet, in Windsor and beyond
Spring hail, strong summer sun and hard winters all take a toll on outdoor memorials in Windsor. Heavy stone and bronze last; glass, thin ceramic and resin tend to crack within a few seasons. For a memorial tree, a hardy northern Colorado species such as a hackberry or bur oak, planted after the last spring frost and watered deeply during dry spells, stands the best chance of thriving for decades.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Windsor?
By our estimate, about 16,000 households in Windsor have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,350 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 43,840, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How do Colorado attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Colorado human cremation rate at about 77.4%[5]. We show it on the Windsor page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Windsor climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 88°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Windsor?
The closest communities we cover are Greeley (about 9 miles), Loveland (about 10 miles) and Fort Collins (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Windsor too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is there free support if I'm struggling after my pet's death?
Yes. Several US veterinary schools run free pet loss helplines. Tufts University's helpline is free[12] and volunteer-staffed on weekday evenings, with voicemail at other times, and Cornell's hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors. Talking to someone can make practical choices, like the urn, feel less heavy.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
