Elsmere, Delaware
What choosing an urn is like in Elsmere
Space in Elsmere's rowhouse-scale homes is limited, so memorials here tend to be small: a palm-sized urn on a bookcase, a framed photograph with the paw impression beside it, or a wooden keepsake box holding a collar and tags. A family with a strip of garden might add a flat marker among the tulips. Settle on dimensions and the full cost with the maker before paying a deposit.
Canby Park, the wooded green space along Elsmere's eastern side, and the paths beside the Brandywine a few miles away are where many local families go to think. Parks have their own policies about scattering, so ask before you do. Tucking a plant-based urn into a big terracotta pot on the front porch lets the memorial grow right at home, and it can move if you do.
If you live near Elsmere but work or shop in Philadelphia, it may be simpler to have the urn delivered there, or to choose one in person at a crematory or memorial supplier in the larger centre. That's especially true for heavy pieces like marble or granite. Just ask for the exact capacity in cubic inches before you drive anywhere, so you know it will fit the ashes you have.
With roughly 6,196 residents, Elsmere is the 10th-largest of the 11 Delaware communities we cover. Philadelphia, roughly 27 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Elsmere run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Wilmington (3 miles, a larger centre), Newark (9 miles, a larger centre) and Chester (14 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Elsmere too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Cremation in Delaware, and what it means for urns
Cremation accounts for about 59.7%[5] of deaths in Delaware. Because it isn't yet everyone's default, local memorial shops may carry only a few pet designs. That's no reason to settle. Take the capacity you need and a photo of the spot where the urn will go, and you'll soon see whether the local range fits or whether to look further.
That Delaware rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Elsmere only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Timing a burial or scattering in Elsmere
Scattering in snow is possible but rarely what families picture. Grey ashes stand out on white snow and melt into slush, and a cold wind makes it hard to take your time. Many people in Elsmere keep the ashes at home through January, February and December and scatter in spring, on a favorite walk or by open water. A scattering tube or a small keepsake urn keeps a portion ready until the day comes.
Elsmere winters bring average lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. If you'd like to bury your pet's ashes in the garden, frozen ground may mean waiting until spring. That's fine: the ashes are safe indoors in the temporary container or the urn, and many families find a spring burial, with the first flowers coming up, a gentler moment than a cold graveside in January.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
Many Elsmere families don't buy an urn separately at all. A Virginia provider, for example, prices private cremation packages at $189–$300[6]: the lowest comes with a temporary container, the next with a wooden urn and the top with a wooden photo urn. That kind of package upgrade is often the cheapest way to get a decent urn. Compare it with the ranges below before you order elsewhere.

What Delaware allows with pet ashes
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Delaware.
To find your county or city office in Delaware, start with the official Delaware local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Delaware level first; our Delaware rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Elsmere or your HOA adds anything.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Talk to the family first. Agree who would like a keepsake and whether any ashes will be scattered or buried.
- Set aside the shares before filling the main urn; the ashes sharing planner shows how much each person can have.
- Buy matching keepsakes for relatives in other cities, and hand them over in person where you can.
- If you must post ashes, read your carrier's rules before packing. USPS is the only US service that takes them, and only via Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn once you know what's left, sized for that amount.
- Plan any scattering for a calm, dry day, and keep a little back in case someone wants to join later.
Remembering your pet, in Elsmere and beyond
Elsmere families wanting a keepsake to carry can choose a small vial pendant, a keyring charm or fused glass with ash swirled inside. Each takes only a sprinkle of remains, leaving most of them for an urn at home. If you plan to order more than one piece, mention it to the provider early so the ashes can be portioned before they are returned.

Questions people ask
Does the Elsmere climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 87°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How many pet owners live in Elsmere?
By our estimate, about 2,300 households in Elsmere have at least one dog or cat, and around 190 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 6,196, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Will I have to travel to Philadelphia to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Philadelphia (roughly 27 miles from Elsmere) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Elsmere?
Usually yes. Wilmington is about 3 miles away, Newark is about 9 miles away and Chester is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[8]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
How can I share my pet's ashes with family in other cities?
Most families set aside small shares before filling the main urn, then give each person a matching keepsake urn. Handing keepsakes over in person is simplest. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold, and our guide to primary urns versus keepsakes helps you decide which vessel does which job.
