Pet Urns in Delaware: what to know

Engraving is where most urn orders in Delaware slow down. A plain urn can often be collected or shipped quickly; a name, dates, a photo or a paw print adds a proof, a production step and sometimes weeks. If you have a date in mind, such as a memorial gathering, tell the seller before you order and ask for the making and shipping times separately.

In Delaware, as elsewhere, the urn is often the memorial families keep longest, sometimes for decades. That's a good reason not to rush it. Choose a material you'll still like in ten years, a lid that closes securely and a size close to the ashes you have. If you'd like a second opinion, send us your pet's details and we'll email some options.

We cover 11 communities in Delaware, from Wilmington, Dover and Newark to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Delaware: summer highs reach about 88°F in Seaford, while winter lows average 26°F in Wilmington. In 64% of the Delaware communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 11 communities in Delaware on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

A pet and its family in Delaware

Why urns are common in Delaware

Cremation accounts for about 59.7%[1] of deaths in Delaware. Because it isn't yet everyone's default, local memorial shops may carry only a few pet designs. That's no reason to settle. Take the capacity you need and a photo of the spot where the urn will go, and you'll soon see whether the local range fits or whether to look further.

That Delaware rate is a human statistic published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.

Pet urn and engraving prices for Delaware

One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[2], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[3] and metal urns $96–$265[4]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[4], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[5]. Expect Delaware providers to be in the same territory.

Many Delaware families don't buy an urn separately at all. A Virginia provider, for example, prices private cremation packages at $189–$300[6]: the lowest comes with a temporary container, the next with a wooden urn and the top with a wooden photo urn. That kind of package upgrade is often the cheapest way to get a decent urn. Compare it with the ranges below before you order elsewhere.

What Delaware allows with pet ashes

Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Delaware.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Delaware local government directory.

How to get from ashes to urn

  1. Let the cremation happen first. Choosing an urn can wait weeks; there's no reason it has to be decided in the hours after losing your pet.
  2. Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, if you can: a clipping of fur or the collar can go into a keepsake later.
  3. Write down your pet's healthy weight, not the weight after a long illness, since urn capacity is worked out from it.
  4. When the ashes arrive, check the label on the bag or box shows your pet's name, then set it somewhere quiet.
  5. Look at urns slowly, keeping the weight figure nearby for the capacity check, then narrow the field to three at most.
  6. Order when you feel settled, not because a countdown on a website says a discount is ending.

Small ways to keep your pet's memory close

For some families, the most meaningful memorial is a living one: a tree planted with a biodegradable urn, a rose bed in the garden or a bench somewhere your pet loved. You can combine one with an indoor urn by setting aside a portion of the ashes first. Our guide to ash volume, temporary containers and shares explains how shares are usually packed.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Delaware?

Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.

Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Delaware?

It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.

What size urn does my pet need?

Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[17]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.

Is there free pet loss support in Delaware?

Yes. University vet schools in the US offer free phone support: Cornell's pet loss hotline is answered by vet students with grief-counseling training, and Tufts runs a helpline too. Many local crematories and vet clinics also run support groups or keep a list of counselors. Reaching out doesn't need a reason beyond missing your pet.

How can our family share a pet's ashes across Delaware?

Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[12] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.

Should I choose the urn before or after the cremation?

Either works. Choosing before means the ashes can come home already in the urn; choosing after gives you time and lets you size it to the actual ashes. Most families in Delaware choose after, keeping the ashes in the temporary container for a few weeks while they decide.
