Pet urns and keepsakes in Rehoboth Beach

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

What choosing an urn is like in Rehoboth Beach

Because many Rehoboth residents split their year between the beach and another home, portable keepsakes are practical: a small urn for each house, a pendant, or a paw print cast that can travel. Dividing ashes also lets friends or relatives in other states keep a share. Mention any division you want before cremation, so the provider can portion the remains and label each container clearly.

Rehoboth has long been a destination for artists, retirees and a large LGBTQ community, and memorials here often have a personal, artistic touch: a handmade ceramic urn, a painted stone, a piece of glass art holding a little ash, or a framed portrait. Makers along the coast can create custom pieces. Ask about size, cost and the time needed before ordering.

If you live near Rehoboth Beach but work or shop in Rehoboth Beach, it may be simpler to have the urn delivered there, or to choose one in person at a crematory or memorial supplier in the larger centre. That's especially true for heavy pieces like marble or granite. Just ask for the exact capacity in cubic inches before you drive anywhere, so you know it will fit the ashes you have.

Rehoboth Beach is home to about 1,309 people, the 11th-largest of the 11 Delaware communities we cover.

Rehoboth Beach sits within easy reach of Millsboro (15 miles, a larger centre), Georgetown (16 miles, a larger centre) and Milford (23 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Rehoboth Beach; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

480

Rehoboth Beach: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

1,309 ÷ 2.5 = 524 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 480. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

40

dog and cat deaths per year in Rehoboth Beach, our estimate

How we calculated this

480 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 40 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry.

Cremation customs in Delaware and your pet

Local families are split between two traditions: cremation accounts for roughly 59.7%[5] of deaths in Delaware, and burial for much of the rest. A pet urn sits comfortably in either. People who lean towards burial often choose a sturdy urn they can later place in the ground or a pet cemetery; those who lean towards cremation usually keep it on display.

That Delaware rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Rehoboth Beach only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Keeping an urn safe through Rehoboth Beach's seasons

If you live near the coast, salt air is a bigger enemy than temperature. Raw brass and some metals darken quickly within sight of the sea, and outdoor metal can pit. Lacquered brass, powder-coated metal, glazed ceramic and stone all cope well. For a garden memorial in Rehoboth Beach, granite or a sealed stone urn will look the same in ten years as it does now.

Mild climates are kind to urns kept indoors, but damp can still be a problem in basements, garages and rooms against an outside wall. A wooden urn stored somewhere damp can grow mold on unfinished surfaces, and unlacquered brass tarnishes. Keep the urn in a lived-in room, ideally on an inside wall, and leave the ashes in their sealed bag inside it so moisture never reaches them.

Pet urn and engraving prices for Rehoboth Beach

One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[6], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[7] and metal urns $96–$265[8]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[8], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[9]. Expect Rehoboth Beach providers to be in the same territory.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Delaware: Delaware costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Delaware allows with pet ashes

Rules about pet ashes are about places, not containers. The urn you choose, whether it's engraved and how long you keep it are entirely your call. What follows for Delaware covers where scattering and burial are generally accepted, so you can plan any outdoor part of the memorial without worrying.

To find your county or city office in Delaware, start with the official Delaware local government directory.

For Delaware's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Delaware guide. Local rules in Rehoboth Beach can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

How to get from ashes to urn

  1. Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, so the choice isn't made at a front desk afterwards.
  2. Choose while your pet is still with you, should that feel bearable; some people find deciding calmly beforehand kinder.
  3. Size the urn from their weight at their best, and allow a little room so the sealed bag slides in easily.
  4. Tell the crematory which urn you've picked so the ashes can be transferred into it before you collect them.
  5. Leave the engraving until the dates are final. An engraved plate can always be attached a couple of weeks afterwards.
  6. Plan who will collect the urn; for a delivery, make sure someone is in to accept the parcel.

Keepsakes, displays and living memorials

The beach, the boardwalk and the dunes at Cape Henlopen State Park just north of town are woven into many families' memories here. Scattering ashes on the beach or in the park may need permission from the state, so ask before you go. Some families choose a water-soluble urn designed to be placed in the ocean or bay, which dissolves gently after it is set down.

Questions people ask

Why does the Rehoboth Beach page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 59.7%[5] of Delaware residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Does the Rehoboth Beach climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 86°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January and February, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rehoboth Beach?

Usually yes. Millsboro is about 15 miles away, Georgetown is about 16 miles away and Milford is about 23 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is Rehoboth Beach big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 480 Rehoboth Beach households keep a dog or cat and around 40 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 1,309), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Can I bury my pet's urn in my yard in Delaware?

Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed, and it's much simpler than burying a body. If you rent, ask your landlord; if you're in a homeowners' association, check its rules. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, consider keeping a small portion indoors in a keepsake.

How do I make sure the engraving is right?

Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
