The rural lots around Christmas offer plenty of space for an outdoor memorial, but strong sun and summer rain are tough on materials. Granite and heavy cast stone last longest, especially when set on a gravel base and placed in an open spot. Wood and painted finishes fade quickly, so they're better kept on a covered porch. Check it after big storms for tilting.
Christmas residents usually shop for memorials in Orlando, Titusville or online, since there are few local stores. A cremation urn, garden stone, piece of jewelry or framed paw print can be chosen weeks after the loss. The one thing that must be done promptly is making a clay print or saving a tuft of fur, which needs your pet's body at home. Delivery to east Orange County is usually quick.
If you live near Christmas but work or shop in Orlando, it may be simpler to have the urn delivered there, or to choose one in person at a crematory or memorial supplier in the larger centre. That's especially true for heavy pieces like marble or granite. Just ask for the exact capacity in cubic inches before you drive anywhere, so you know it will fit the ashes you have.
Christmas is home to about 1,000 people, the 221st-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Christmas run from there.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
When cremation covers around 72.5%[5] of deaths, as it does in Florida, ashes stop being an awkward subject at the dinner table. That openness helps with a pet. Relatives are more likely to ask for a small share, and friends may already know a potter or an engraver. Tell people you're choosing an urn; the most useful leads often come from someone who did it recently.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Christmas only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and damp: materials for Christmas
Scattering in Christmas's hottest months is easier early in the morning, before the heat builds and the afternoon wind picks up. Ashes are fine, pale grit rather than soft dust, and they drift further than people expect in a breeze. Stand with the wind at your back, pour close to the ground and bring a bottle of water to rinse your hands. If July feels too harsh, there's no reason not to wait for autumn.
Heat usually comes with air conditioning, and the swing between humid outdoor air and dry, cooled rooms is hard on some materials. Solid wood can move slightly, so joints open or lids stick; lacquered brass holds up better, and unlacquered brass tarnishes faster in humid air. Whatever urn you choose, keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside it. That keeps moisture out and makes a later move much easier.
What pet urns cost in Christmas
Pet urns are a real part of what families spend after a loss: one industry report says they generate over 40% of pet memorial product revenue[6]. It's worth spending carefully rather than quickly. The ranges below come from national price guides and published crematory price lists; Christmas prices will usually fall inside them. Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for Florida follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.

A simple plan for the urn decision
- Let the cremation happen first. The urn can be chosen weeks later; nothing about it has to be settled on the day your pet dies.
- Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, where possible: a lock of fur or their collar might become part of a keepsake down the line.
- Write down your pet's healthy weight, not the weight after a long illness, since urn capacity is worked out from it.
- When the ashes arrive, check the label on the bag or box shows your pet's name, then set it somewhere quiet.
- Look at urns slowly, keeping the weight figure nearby for the capacity check, then narrow the field to three at most.
- Order when you feel settled, and ignore any timer on a product page warning that a sale ends soon.
Small ways to keep your pet's memory close
Planting a tree above a biodegradable urn feels natural on the open land around Christmas. A live oak, a southern red cedar or a cabbage palm all fit the local landscape and handle wet and dry spells. For a keepsake you can take anywhere, set aside a little ash in a pendant or mini urn, so the tree and the keepsake together tell the story.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Christmas page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Christmas?
Usually yes. Bithlo is about 6 miles away, Wedgefield is about 6 miles away and Avalon Park is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 22 miles from Christmas) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is Christmas big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 370 Christmas households keep a dog or cat and around 30 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 1,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
When is the best time to scatter ashes in Christmas's heat?
Early morning is best, before the heat builds and afternoon winds pick up. In July, many families wait for a cooler day or for autumn. Bring water, scatter close to the ground with the wind behind you and keep a small portion back in a keepsake if anyone can't come.
Can two pets share one urn?
Yes. Companion urns are made to hold two sets of ashes, sometimes in separate compartments. Many families prefer matching single urns instead, because pets rarely die at the same time and a companion urn can sit half empty for years. If you do choose a shared urn, size it for both pets' combined weight.
