Pet Urns in Florida: what to know

Families in Florida are often spread across several cities, and that makes sharing ashes a common question. A set of matching keepsake urns lets a sibling or grown child in another town keep a portion. Handing them over in person is simplest; posting ashes comes with rules that vary by country and carrier. Our city pages cover the local details.

A useful way to use the Florida pages is to start with your own town, then look at the largest city nearby. The town page tells you what's typical where you live: how urns reach you and what the weather means for an outdoor memorial. The larger city's page shows what's within a day's drive, such as showrooms, stone workshops and makers who take commissions.

We cover 235 communities in Florida, from Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Florida: summer highs reach about 94°F in Cape Coral, while winter lows average 41°F in Tallahassee. In 0% of the Florida communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

Why urns are common in Florida

Cremation is the usual choice in Florida: about 72.5%[1] of people there are cremated. When cremation is this familiar, keeping ashes at home isn't unusual, and most people have seen an urn on a relative's shelf. That tends to carry over to pets. Families here rarely feel they need to explain why their dog's or cat's ashes live in the living room, and local crematories are used to selling urns alongside the cremation.

The cremation figure for Florida comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Pet urn and engraving prices for Florida

One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about $50 to more than $1,000[2], and most of that spread comes from hand work: a sculpted figurine or a commissioned ceramic takes far longer than a laser-engraved box. Basic urns start at around $50[3]. For most Florida families, the sweet spot is a solid wooden or ceramic urn with name engraving, well under $200 all in.

If part of the ashes will go into the ground, the cost picture changes. Biodegradable pet urns run $15–$80[4] in one national guide, and outdoor rock or sandstone urns made to sit in a garden cost $300–$395[5] at one crematory network. A simple engraved garden stone over buried ashes is cheaper still: by our estimate, entry prices sit at ~$39[6] across three US sellers. For many Florida families, that pairing costs less than one marble urn.

Before you scatter or bury in Florida

If you rent in Florida, burying an urn in the yard needs your landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can have their own rules. Scattering on public land is usually tolerated when done discreetly, but it isn't always permitted. The notes below cover the basics for Florida; your city or county has the final word.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Florida local government directory.

How to get from ashes to urn

  1. Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, so the choice isn't made at a front desk afterwards.
  2. Choose while your pet is still with you, should that feel bearable; some people find deciding calmly beforehand kinder.
  3. Size the urn from their weight at their best, and allow a little room so the sealed bag slides in easily.
  4. Tell the crematory which urn you've picked so the ashes can be transferred into it before you collect them.
  5. Leave the engraving until the dates are final. An engraved plate can always be attached a couple of weeks afterwards.
  6. Plan who will collect the urn, or who will be home to sign for it if it's delivered.

Small ways to keep your pet's memory close

If you'd like part of your pet's ashes outdoors, a quiet corner of your own garden, a favorite walking route (with permission where needed) or a pet cemetery are the usual choices around Florida. Keeping most of the ashes in an urn at home while scattering a little means you never have to choose between the two.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Florida?

No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.

Can I bury my pet's urn at home in Florida?

Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed and much simpler than burying a body. Renters need the landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can be stricter. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, keep a portion indoors.

How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Florida?

It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.

Which places in Florida have the widest choice of pet urns?

Usually the largest cities, such as Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa, where crematories keep display ranges and independent makers and engravers are easier to find. Smaller towns rely more on the vet clinic's catalog and on delivery from online shops. If you'd like to see urns in person, a trip to the nearest large city can be worth it for stone or glass.

What size urn does my pet need?

Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[16]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.

What should I ask a crematory in Florida about urns?

Ask what container the ashes come back in, whether an urn is included in the price, what an upgrade would cost and whether they'll place the ashes into an urn you bring. Ask too how long engraving takes if you order through them. Getting the answers in writing makes it easy to compare with any urn you find elsewhere.
