Pet urns in Pine Hills: the local picture
Many Pine Hills households are working families who want a memorial that is meaningful without being expensive. A handmade clay paw print, a photo printed on canvas, a planted mango seedling in the yard, or a shoebox of collars and tags can mean as much as anything from a catalog. If you rent, choose something you can take with you when the lease ends.
Families with relatives in Jamaica, Haiti or other islands sometimes send part of the remains overseas. Tiny sealed vials, pendants or keepsake urns can hold a small amount each. For a relative flying home with a portion, a thin wooden or plastic box clears airport screening more easily, and the cremation certificate should travel with it. Shipping remains internationally has its own rules, so ask the crematory before posting anything.
In a close community like Pine Hills, a pet's death is often noticed by neighbors, church friends and the people at the feed store. Some families choose an urn with that in mind, something that can sit in a front room where visitors will see it, rather than tucked away. Others want a private keepsake that only they understand. Both are right, and neither needs to be expensive.
Pine Hills is home to about 66,000 people, the 50th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 6 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Pine Hills run from there.
Families in Pine Hills often end up using a provider from Clarcona (2 miles), Orlovista (3 miles) and Lockhart (3 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
24,500
Pine Hills: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
66,000 ÷ 2.5 = 26,400 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 24,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate

Local cremation habits and the urn question
Cremation is the usual choice in Florida: about 72.5%[5] of people there are cremated. When cremation is this familiar, keeping ashes at home isn't unusual, and most people have seen an urn on a relative's shelf. That tends to carry over to pets. Families here rarely feel they need to explain why their dog's or cat's ashes live in the living room, and local crematories are used to selling urns alongside the cremation.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Pine Hills only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and damp: materials for Pine Hills
Lacquer and hand-painted finishes dry more slowly in humid heat, and some small workshops slow down their finishing work in May, June, July, August and September. If you're ordering a hand-finished urn for a summer date in Pine Hills, ask whether the season affects their schedule. Laser engraving on metal and stone isn't affected, which makes those materials the safer choice when time is short.
Pine Hills summers are hot, with July highs averaging about 92°F. Heat doesn't harm ashes, but it does age urns. A wooden urn on a sunny windowsill will fade within a season or two, printed photo panels bleach and some resin figurines can soften in a very hot room or car. Choose a spot on an inside wall, away from west-facing windows, and draw the blinds on the hottest afternoons.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
Many Pine Hills families don't buy an urn separately at all. A Virginia provider, for example, prices private cremation packages at $189–$300[6]: the lowest comes with a temporary container, the next with a wooden urn and the top with a wooden photo urn. That kind of package upgrade is often the cheapest way to get a decent urn. Compare it with the ranges below before you order elsewhere.

What Florida allows with pet ashes
Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for Florida follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Pine Hills's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Ask the crematory for its urn catalog before the appointment, so the choice isn't made at a front desk afterwards.
- Choose while your pet is still with you if that feels right; some families find it easier while there's time.
- Size the urn from their weight at their best, and allow a little room so the sealed bag slides in easily.
- Tell the crematory which urn you've picked so the ashes can be transferred into it before you collect them.
- Leave the engraving until the dates are final. A plate can be fixed to the urn a week or two later.
- Plan who will collect the urn, or who will be home to sign for it if it's delivered.
Keeping your pet close in Pine Hills
In a neighborhood of older ranch homes with carports and front porches, many Pine Hills families keep memorials close to the door: a flat stepping stone with a name pressed into it, a small wind chime hung from the porch beam, or a potted croton by the steps. Indoors, a framed photo beside a small wooden box on the dresser works well. Confirm the maker's price and turnaround before placing an order.

Questions people ask
Does the Pine Hills climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Pine Hills follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Roughly how many pets die in Pine Hills each year?
Our estimate is around 2,000. It comes from Pine Hills's population (about 66,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 24,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Pine Hills actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 6 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Pine Hills and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How much does it cost to engrave a pet urn?
Simple name-only engraving typically adds $15–$25[8], a photo engraving $40–$100[9] and an engraved paw print or symbol $20–$35[10] (per one large retailer). On a mid-priced wooden urn, engraving can add about half the urn's price[11]. Local trophy and awards shops in Pine Hills may engrave a plate for less.
Do I have to buy an urn right away?
No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in Pine Hills wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.
