Pet urns in Hollywood: sizes, costs and engraving
By our estimate, about 58,000 households in Hollywood share their home with a dog or cat, and roughly 4,800 of those pets die each year. Many of their ashes come home needing an urn. Here's how to choose one well.

Choosing a pet urn in Hollywood
Many Hollywood residents live in condos or apartments where space is limited and outdoor memorials aren't allowed, so an urn on a shelf, a framed paw print or a keepsake pendant are common choices. Snowbirds and families with relatives up north often split the ashes so part can travel with them. Request the split before cremation, so the keepsakes come back filled and sealed.
Anything outdoors in South Florida faces strong sun, salt air, heavy rain and hurricane winds. Granite and bronze hold up well; painted resin fades and can crack. If you'd like a living memorial, a native palm, a flowering shrub or a potted plant on a balcony can work. A biodegradable urn can go into the ground with the planting, where it breaks down naturally.
Many homes in and around Hollywood have a garden, which opens up a choice city apartments don't have: part indoors, part outside. Some families keep the main urn on a shelf and bury a small portion in a biodegradable urn under a favorite shrub. Others choose a weatherproof stone urn for the garden itself. If you rent, or might move in the next few years, keep the main urn indoors so it can come with you.
Hollywood's population is around 157,019, the 12th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 13 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Hollywood run from there.
Hollywood sits within easy reach of Hallandale Beach (2 miles), Dania Beach (3 miles) and Aventura (4 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Hollywood; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
58,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Hollywood
How we calculated this
157,019 ÷ 2.5 = 62,808 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 58,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
4,800
Hollywood families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
58,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 4,800 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation in Florida, and what it means for urns
About 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, one of the higher rates around. A high cremation rate means a well-developed market for urns: more sellers, more materials and more local engravers who've done it before. For pet owners, that mostly means choice and competition, so it's worth comparing a crematory's counter price with an online maker's delivered price before deciding.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Hollywood tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Keeping an urn safe through Hollywood's seasons
Don't leave an urn, or the temporary container of ashes, in a parked car in a Hollywood summer. The ashes won't change, but glued photo frames, resin and some finishes can warp at the temperatures a closed car reaches. It's also simply a hard thing to come back to. Bring the ashes straight inside when you collect them, and keep the urn out of direct sun once it's home.
Hollywood summers are hot, with August highs averaging about 91°F. Heat doesn't harm ashes, but it does age urns. A wooden urn on a sunny windowsill will fade within a season or two, printed photo panels bleach and some resin figurines can soften in a very hot room or car. Choose a spot on an inside wall, away from west-facing windows, and draw the blinds on the hottest afternoons.

Pet urn and engraving prices for Hollywood
Many Hollywood families don't buy an urn separately at all. A Virginia provider, for example, prices private cremation packages at $189–$300[6]: the lowest comes with a temporary container, the next with a wooden urn and the top with a wooden photo urn. That kind of package upgrade is often the cheapest way to get a decent urn. Compare it with the ranges below before you order elsewhere.

Before you scatter or bury in Florida
There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Hollywood.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Hollywood may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Bring the ashes home as they are. The temporary container is sealed and safe; there's no deadline for moving them.
- Weigh up how many people want a share. Before any order goes in, settle whether a spouse, a grown child living elsewhere or a grandparent would like a portion.
- Work out the capacity you need. The rule of thumb is one cubic inch for every pound your pet weighed when well; the urn size calculator does the sum for you.
- Choose the material for the room it will live in. Wood for warmth, ceramic for color, brass for small spaces, stone for durability.
- Approve a written proof of any engraving, and check the spelling of your pet's name twice.
- Move the ashes in their sealed bag without opening it, or have the crematory place them in the urn on your behalf.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials
The beach and the Intracoastal Waterway are part of daily life in Hollywood, and some families choose to scatter part of a pet's ashes at sea or remember their pet with a quiet sunrise visit to the shore. If you'd like to scatter on the water, ask about options away from crowded beaches, and keep a small portion aside for a keepsake at home.

Questions people ask
Why does the Hollywood page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 13 miles from Hollywood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Hollywood?
The closest communities we cover are Hallandale Beach (about 2 miles), Dania Beach (about 3 miles) and Aventura (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Hollywood too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Roughly how many pets die in Hollywood each year?
Our estimate is around 4,800. It comes from Hollywood's population (about 157,019), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 58,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Do pet crematories near Hollywood sell urns?
Almost all of them do, and many include a basic urn or wooden box in their private cremation package. The range is usually small but chosen to fit the ashes they return. If you'd like something more personal, you can buy elsewhere and keep the ashes in the temporary container until it arrives. Ask the crematory whether they'll swap the included urn for an upgrade at the price difference.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[8]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
