Pet urns in DeLand: sizes, costs and engraving

DeLand, Florida

Where families in DeLand find their urns

DeLand's historic homes and oak-shaded yards lend themselves to classic tributes: an engraved slab beneath a live oak, a wooden urn on the mantel, or a framed portrait in the hall. Students and faculty at Stetson who expect to move after a few years often choose something smaller, such as a keepsake pendant, a mini urn or a paw impression in clay that fits in a suitcase.

An outdoor memorial in DeLand faces frosty winter mornings, hot summers and heavy storms, sometimes in the same year. Granite and dense natural stone cope well; painted wood, soft sandstone and thin metal do not. Place a marker beneath a tree's canopy, where it is shaded from the harshest sun, on a gravel bed that drains quickly. Check it each spring for tilt or cracks.

Rural roads and long carrier routes make timing less predictable around DeLand. If you're planning a memorial on a particular date, order the urn as soon as you've decided and ask for the production time and the shipping time separately. Engraved and custom pieces add a step, so leave a margin of a couple of weeks. The ashes can stay in their temporary container until the urn arrives.

DeLand is home to about 46,346 people, the 67th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Orlando, about 34 miles (55 km) away, which is where some providers serving DeLand are based.

DeLand sits within easy reach of Deltona (9 miles, a larger centre), DeBary (10 miles) and Sanford (16 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from DeLand; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

17,000

DeLand: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

46,346 ÷ 2.5 = 18,538 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 17,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

1,400

Estimated dog and cat losses in DeLand each year

How we calculated this

17,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Cremation in Florida, and what it means for urns

When cremation covers around 72.5%[5] of deaths, as it does in Florida, ashes stop being an awkward subject at the dinner table. That openness helps with a pet. Relatives are more likely to ask for a small share, and friends may already know a potter or an engraver. Tell people you're choosing an urn; the most useful leads often come from someone who did it recently.

Source for the Florida number: NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for DeLand, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

Keeping an urn safe through DeLand's seasons

An outdoor scattering or burial in July, with highs near 91°F, is hard on older relatives and on whoever has to dig. Keep the gathering short, find shade and dig the hole the evening before. Paper, salt and fiber urns can soften in a hot garage or car trunk, so keep a biodegradable urn indoors until the day it's used.

Lacquer and hand-painted finishes dry more slowly in humid heat, and some small workshops slow down their finishing work in May, June, July, August and September. If you're ordering a hand-finished urn for a summer date in DeLand, ask whether the season affects their schedule. Laser engraving on metal and stone isn't affected, which makes those materials the safer choice when time is short.

How much to budget for an urn

If part of the ashes will go into the ground, the cost picture changes. Biodegradable pet urns run $15–$80[6] in one national guide, and outdoor rock or sandstone urns made to sit in a garden cost $300–$395[7] at one crematory network. A simple engraved garden stone over buried ashes is cheaper still: by our estimate, entry prices sit at ~$39[8] across three US sellers. For many DeLand families, that pairing costs less than one marble urn.

We keep the detailed Florida price table on one page so it stays current: see Florida prices.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury

If you rent in DeLand, burying an urn in the yard needs your landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can have their own rules. Scattering on public land is usually tolerated when done discreetly, but it isn't always permitted. The notes below cover the basics for Florida; your city or county has the final word.

To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether DeLand or your HOA adds anything.

How to get from ashes to urn

  1. Ask what came with the cremation. A simple urn often comes as part of the package, sometimes with the option to trade up.
  2. Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
  3. Shortlist two or three urns whose listing gives a real volume figure in cubic inches or litres rather than a vague size word.
  4. Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, especially if a date matters.
  5. Unpack the urn the day it arrives, so any chip or dent gets reported without delay.
  6. Place it out of direct sun and away from heaters, on a stable surface at a height pets and children can't reach.

Remembering your pet, in DeLand and beyond

West Volusia's fern nurseries and wooded lots give families ideas for living memorials: a bed of native ferns around a small stone, a young live oak or dogwood planted with a biodegradable urn, or a shaded bench where the family can sit. Many households keep most of the ashes indoors and set just a small portion into the garden, so moving house later is easier.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Florida?

For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in DeLand follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 34 miles from DeLand) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Does the DeLand climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

How many pet owners live in DeLand?

By our estimate, about 17,000 households in DeLand have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,400 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 46,346, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

My vet in DeLand uses a crematory near Orlando. Can I still choose my own urn?

Yes. You can ask for the ashes to come back in the standard container and buy any urn you like, or ask the vet for the crematory's catalog and choose from that so the ashes return already in it. Either way, there's no extra charge for simply declining an urn upgrade.

Can the crematory send the urn straight to our home near DeLand?

Many can, though some prefer to return ashes through the vet clinic. Ask when you arrange the cremation. If they ship it, ask how the ashes will be packed, which carrier they use and whether a signature is needed. For a heavy stone urn, collecting it from the clinic may be simpler than waiting for a rural delivery.
