Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Choosing a pet urn in Fort Lauderdale
South Florida gardens grow fast year-round, so a memorial planting can fill in quickly: a hibiscus, a native coontie or a small palm over a biodegradable urn. Hurricanes can uproot trees and scatter garden ornaments, so a flat, heavy stone set into the ground is safer than anything tall. Indoors, an urn and photo together remain a simple, lasting choice.
In a Fort Lauderdale condo, memorials tend to be compact: a small urn on a shelf, a framed paw print, or jewelry holding a trace of ashes. Humidity and salt air can tarnish some metals and warp untreated wood, so sealed ceramic, stone or stainless steel hold up better near the beach. If you move between homes seasonally, choose something easy to pack.
One local option that Fort Lauderdale families often overlook is the trophy or awards shop. Many of them laser-engrave brass plates and wooden panels, and some will engrave an urn you already own. That can be quicker and cheaper than sending an urn back to the seller, and you can check the proof in person. Bring the spelling of your pet's name written down, and ask to see a sample on the same material first.
With roughly 188,677 residents, Fort Lauderdale is the 10th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 20 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Fort Lauderdale run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Oakland Park (4 miles), Dania Beach (5 miles) and Lauderdale Lakes (5 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Fort Lauderdale too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
69,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Fort Lauderdale
How we calculated this
188,677 ÷ 2.5 = 75,471 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 69,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
5,800
dog and cat deaths per year in Fort Lauderdale, our estimate
How we calculated this
69,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 5,800 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation in Florida, and what it means for urns
Cremation is the usual choice in Florida: about 72.5%[5] of people there are cremated. When cremation is this familiar, keeping ashes at home isn't unusual, and most people have seen an urn on a relative's shelf. That tends to carry over to pets. Families here rarely feel they need to explain why their dog's or cat's ashes live in the living room, and local crematories are used to selling urns alongside the cremation.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Fort Lauderdale
Scattering in Fort Lauderdale's hottest months is easier early in the morning, before the heat builds and the afternoon wind picks up. Ashes are fine, pale grit rather than soft dust, and they drift further than people expect in a breeze. Stand with the wind at your back, pour close to the ground and bring a bottle of water to rinse your hands. If August feels too harsh, there's no reason not to wait for autumn.
Fort Lauderdale summers are hot, with August highs averaging about 91°F. Heat doesn't harm ashes, but it does age urns. A wooden urn on a sunny windowsill will fade within a season or two, printed photo panels bleach and some resin figurines can soften in a very hot room or car. Choose a spot on an inside wall, away from west-facing windows, and draw the blinds on the hottest afternoons.

How much to budget for an urn
Keepsakes are cheaper than you might think, and the sets are cheaper still. Keepsake or mini pet urns typically cost $15–$60[6] (per one large retailer); one widely cited figure puts a single keepsake at about $28 and a set of six at about $115[7]. Watch out for tiny premium pieces, though: at one crematory, a 1 oz heart keepsake cost about a third more than its full-size wooden urn[8].

What Florida allows with pet ashes
There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.

The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Fort Lauderdale may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Let the cremation happen first. The urn can be chosen weeks later; nothing about it has to be settled on the day your pet dies.
- Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, if you can: a clipping of fur or the collar can go into a keepsake later.
- Write down your pet's healthy weight, meaning what they weighed before any illness took its toll, because that number sets the urn size.
- When the ashes arrive, check the label on the bag or box shows your pet's name, then set it somewhere quiet.
- Look at urns slowly, with your pet's weight to hand for the capacity check, and shortlist no more than three.
- Order when you feel settled, and ignore any timer on a product page warning that a sale ends soon.
Keeping your pet close in Fort Lauderdale
Life here revolves around the water, from the beaches to the Intracoastal and the canals, and many owners want a memorial tied to the ocean. Scattering at sea is a familiar choice off South Florida, but rules apply, so check before you go. Water-soluble urns float briefly before dissolving, and a keepsake holding a little of the ashes lets you keep part at home.

Questions people ask
Does the Fort Lauderdale climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Fort Lauderdale page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Where are the providers that serve Fort Lauderdale actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Hialeah, about 20 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Fort Lauderdale and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How many pet owners live in Fort Lauderdale?
By our estimate, about 69,500 households in Fort Lauderdale have at least one dog or cat, and around 5,800 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 188,677, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?
Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
Is there free support if I'm struggling after my pet's death?
Yes. Several US veterinary schools run free pet loss helplines. Tufts University's helpline is free[9] and volunteer-staffed on weekday evenings, with voicemail at other times, and Cornell's hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors. Talking to someone can make practical choices, like the urn, feel less heavy.
