The Villages, Florida
Choosing a pet urn in The Villages
Many residents of The Villages have children and grandchildren spread across several states. Tiny keepsake urns, rings or lockets allow each branch of the family to hold a little of the ashes while the main urn stays in Florida. If you would like your pet's remains to be buried with you one day, put that in writing for your family and whoever will handle your own arrangements.
In The Villages, memorials often need to suit a tidy villa and deed-restricted yard. Indoors, an engraved urn or a shadow box with a collar and photo fits a small room. Outdoors, a small stone in a flower bed may be allowed, but check your village's rules before placing anything permanent. Ask makers for size, price and delivery date before paying.
There's no need to rush the urn in The Villages, even if the ashes come back sooner than you expected. The temporary container your vet hands you is sealed and safe. Plenty of rural families keep it on a shelf through the winter and decide in spring whether to bury, scatter or display. If you'd like help thinking it through, tell us about your pet and we'll email some options.
With roughly 79,000 residents, The Villages is the 40th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 45 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover The Villages run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Lady Lake (3 miles), Fruitland Park (6 miles) and Wildwood (9 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
29,000
The Villages: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
79,000 ÷ 2.5 = 31,600 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 29,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
2,400
dog and cat deaths per year in The Villages, our estimate
How we calculated this
29,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
Cremation is now the mainstream choice in Florida, where about 72.5%[5] of people are cremated. In places like this, the urn has become the main memorial for many families, taking the place a headstone once held. That's worth remembering when you choose one for a pet: it may be on a shelf for twenty years, so pick something you'll still like, rather than something that only suits this week.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for The Villages, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and damp: materials for The Villages
Heat usually comes with air conditioning, and the swing between humid outdoor air and dry, cooled rooms is hard on some materials. Solid wood can move slightly, so joints open or lids stick; lacquered brass holds up better, and unlacquered brass tarnishes faster in humid air. Whatever urn you choose, keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside it. That keeps moisture out and makes a later move much easier.
If you're ordering an urn online in May, June, July, August and September, think about where it will wait after delivery. A parcel left on a sun-baked porch can get hot enough to soften adhesives on photo urns or warp a resin piece. Ceramic, stone and metal cope fine. Ask for a delivery window, require a signature or send it to your workplace so it goes inside as soon as it arrives.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in The Villages
One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[6], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[7] and metal urns $96–$265[8]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[8], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[9]. Expect The Villages providers to be in the same territory.

What Florida allows with pet ashes
There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers The Villages.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. The Villages may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Step by step in The Villages
- Talk to the family first. Find out who wants a small share, and whether some ashes are going into the ground or the wind.
- Set aside the shares before filling the main urn; the ashes sharing planner shows how much each person can have.
- Buy matching keepsakes for relatives in other cities, and hand them over in person where you can.
- If you must post ashes, check your postal service's rules first. In the US, only USPS accepts them, by Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn once you know what's left, sized for that amount.
- Plan any scattering for still, dry weather, and hold a small amount in reserve for anyone who asks to take part afterwards.
Keeping your pet close in The Villages
The lakes, preserves and town squares of The Villages are part of how residents spend their days, and some families mark a pet's life with an evening visit to a favorite spot. Scattering ashes on community property or in lakes may not be allowed, so ask first. A biodegradable urn placed in a potted plant on the lanai can keep the memory near you.

Questions people ask
How does The Villages's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in The Villages, with average highs around 92°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 45 miles from The Villages) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Roughly how many pets die in The Villages each year?
Our estimate is around 2,400. It comes from The Villages's population (about 79,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 29,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from The Villages?
Usually yes. Lady Lake is about 3 miles away, Fruitland Park is about 6 miles away and Wildwood is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Do I have to buy an urn right away?
No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in The Villages wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.
Can the crematory send the urn straight to our home near The Villages?
Many can, though some prefer to return ashes through the vet clinic. Ask when you arrange the cremation. If they ship it, ask how the ashes will be packed, which carrier they use and whether a signature is needed. For a heavy stone urn, collecting it from the clinic may be simpler than waiting for a rural delivery.
