How Sebastian families shop for a pet urn
Sebastian's riverfront homes and fishing-town character lend themselves to simple, natural memorials: a wooden or ceramic urn, a stone set in the garden, a small frame holding a clay paw print. Many residents are retirees who may move again, so portable keepsakes make sense here. There's no rush; the remains will keep in their plain container for as long as you need.
Anyone who keeps a boat in Sebastian knows what salt and humidity do to metal fittings, and outdoor memorials get the same treatment. A slab of granite or slate stands up to it; wood, resin and photo prints don't last long. If you'd like a marker in the garden, raise it slightly on crushed shell so summer rain runs off. Inside, a well-sealed urn keeps the damp out.
Families in and around Sebastian often have land, which makes burying the ashes, or part of them, a natural choice. You can bury ashes in almost any container, but a biodegradable urn returns to the soil, while a sealed wooden box or a metal urn lasts much longer. If there's any chance the land will be sold, think about keeping a portion indoors in a keepsake so you're not leaving everything behind.
With roughly 27,352 residents, Sebastian is the 97th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Port St. Lucie, roughly 38 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Sebastian run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Roseland (2 miles), Orchid (4 miles) and Micco (5 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Sebastian too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
10,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Sebastian has (estimate)
How we calculated this
27,352 ÷ 2.5 = 10,941 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
840
Sebastian families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
10,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 840 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Cremation customs in Florida and your pet
About 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, one of the higher rates around. A high cremation rate means a well-developed market for urns: more sellers, more materials and more local engravers who've done it before. For pet owners, that mostly means choice and competition, so it's worth comparing a crematory's counter price with an online maker's delivered price before deciding.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Sebastian tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Keeping an urn safe through Sebastian's seasons
Heat usually comes with air conditioning, and the swing between humid outdoor air and dry, cooled rooms is hard on some materials. Solid wood can move slightly, so joints open or lids stick; lacquered brass holds up better, and unlacquered brass tarnishes faster in humid air. Whatever urn you choose, keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside it. That keeps moisture out and makes a later move much easier.
Scattering in Sebastian's hottest months is easier early in the morning, before the heat builds and the afternoon wind picks up. Ashes are fine, pale grit rather than soft dust, and they drift further than people expect in a breeze. Stand with the wind at your back, pour close to the ground and bring a bottle of water to rinse your hands. If August feels too harsh, there's no reason not to wait for autumn.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
What you'll pay for an urn in Sebastian depends mostly on material and size. A national price guide puts ceramic pet urns at $20–$100[6], wooden ones at $30–$150[7], metal at $40–$200[8] and marble or stone at $80–$300[9]. Local crematory counters and online sellers both tend to land inside those ranges, so use them to spot a price that's out of line, and ask for a total that includes engraving and delivery.
We keep the detailed Florida price table on one page so it stays current: see Florida prices.

Before you scatter or bury in Florida
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Florida.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Sebastian may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
From temporary container to urn
- Ask what came with the cremation. A simple urn often comes as part of the package, sometimes with the option to trade up.
- Check how the ashes came back. Most are in a sealed bag inside a box or tin; note its size before measuring any urn.
- Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
- Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, as both figures count when you have a day in mind.
- Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
- Place it out of direct sun and away from heaters, on a stable surface at a height pets and children can't reach.
Remembering your pet, in Sebastian and beyond
For many Sebastian families, the right farewell is on the water. A dissolving urn can be released on the lagoon where that's permitted, or offshore beyond the inlet if you follow federal rules on distance. Some keep back a spoonful for a charm or a small glass heart before the boat goes out. Knowing roughly how much ash you'll have helps with dividing it.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Port St. Lucie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Port St. Lucie (roughly 38 miles from Sebastian) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Sebastian page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Sebastian?
The closest communities we cover are Roseland (about 2 miles), Orchid (about 4 miles) and Micco (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Sebastian too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is Sebastian big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 10,000 Sebastian households keep a dog or cat and around 840 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 27,352), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is it okay to bury the ashes on our land near Sebastian?
On land you own, burying ashes is generally fine and much simpler than burying a body. Choose a spot away from wells and streams, and use a biodegradable urn if you want the ashes to return to the soil. If the property might be sold one day, keep a small portion indoors so you're not leaving everything behind.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park near Sebastian?
Often you can, but parks set their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot away from paths, playgrounds and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and leave nothing behind. If you're unsure, check with the parks department or scatter on private land with the owner's agreement.
