Pet urns in Star: sizes, costs and engraving

Star, Idaho

How Star families shop for a pet urn

About seven in ten Idaho funerals now involve cremation, so ashes at home are a familiar idea here. Some families scatter a portion along the Boise River or up in the hills beyond the highway; ask the land manager or owner about the exact spot first. A little can be kept in jewelry or a small container so that not everything is released at once.

Relatives in Star often live elsewhere in the valley or farther across the West. If more than one person wants to keep something, ask about splitting ashes into several small containers, or ordering duplicate paw or hoof prints. Tree urns are another choice, though the valley's hot summers mean a young tree will need regular deep watering for its first few years.

The monument company that makes headstones for the cemetery is an overlooked option in towns like Star. Many will cut a small granite marker or engrave a stone urn for a pet, and they know which stone stands up to local weather. Ask for a quote on a simple flat marker if the ashes will be buried on your land; it can be ready within a few weeks.

About 20,874 people live in Star, which makes it the 13th-largest of the 13 Idaho communities we cover. Boise, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Star run from there.

Star sits within easy reach of Eagle (4 miles), Meridian (8 miles, a larger centre) and Caldwell (9 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Star; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

7,700

How many dog- or cat-owning households Star has (estimate)

How we calculated this

20,874 ÷ 2.5 = 8,350 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,700. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

640

Estimated dog and cat losses in Star each year

How we calculated this

7,700 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 640 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

A pet at home in Star

Why urns are common in Idaho

In Idaho, about 71.2%[5] of people are cremated, so most families already have a view on urns: whether they like them on display, prefer to scatter, or split the difference. Pet owners here often do the same thing they'd do for a person, keeping a main urn at home and a little in a keepsake or two. It's a practical, unfussy approach, and there's no wrong version of it.

For the Idaho figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Star rather than as pet data.

Indoor and outdoor urns in Star's climate

Outdoor memorials in Star have to survive July heat and the frosts of January. If you'd like the ashes in the garden, many families bury them in a simple biodegradable urn and put a granite or stone marker above, rather than leaving a decorative urn outside. The marker handles the weather, and the ashes are safely underground whatever the season.

Because Star swings from July heat to winter frost, a planted memorial needs a little planning. Put a biodegradable urn and a young tree in the ground in spring or early autumn, water it through its first summer and mulch it before January. A tree that survives its first year usually settles in, and it will mark the spot for decades.

Pet urn and engraving prices for Star

One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about $50 to more than $1,000[6], and most of that spread comes from hand work: a sculpted figurine or a commissioned ceramic takes far longer than a laser-engraved box. Basic urns start at around $50[7]. For most Star families, the sweet spot is a solid wooden or ceramic urn with name engraving, well under $200 all in.

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Idaho

Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Idaho.

Idaho keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Star.

Start with the Idaho rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Star's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

Step by step in Star

  1. Decide whether each pet gets its own urn in its own style, or whether a coordinated set, added to as time passes, appeals more.
  2. Pick a design that will still be made later, ideally one a nearby craftsperson could reproduce, if future urns need to match.
  3. Size each urn for one pet; a shared companion urn only makes sense once both sets of ashes are home.
  4. Label the base of every urn with a name and dates, even if the front is engraved, so they're never mixed up.
  5. Leave shelf space beside the first urn so a later one can join it without rearranging the room.
  6. File each crematory certificate with its urn, in an envelope taped underneath or kept together in a drawer.

Remembering your pet, in Star and beyond

Star's newer homes often have open backyards with room for something permanent: a boulder with an engraved name, a small bench, or a stone set among drought-tolerant plants. If you might sell in a few years, choose something movable. Inside, a simple urn or a shadow box with a collar, a photo and a tag is a lasting way to keep your animal close.

Questions people ask

How do Idaho attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Idaho human cremation rate at about 71.2%[5]. We show it on the Star page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Where are the providers that serve Star actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Boise, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Star and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Does the Star climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

How many pet owners live in Star?

By our estimate, about 7,700 households in Star have at least one dog or cat, and around 640 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 20,874, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Is there free support if I'm struggling after my pet's death?

Yes. Several US veterinary schools run free pet loss helplines. Tufts University's helpline is free[9] and volunteer-staffed on weekday evenings, with voicemail at other times, and Cornell's hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors. Talking to someone can make practical choices, like the urn, feel less heavy.

How do I make sure the engraving is right?

Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
