Cremation customs in Texas and your pet
Roughly 55.7%[5] of people in Texas are cremated, and the share has been rising for years. As cremation grows, so does the habit of keeping ashes at home. In national research on human cremation, 37%[6] of Americans said they would keep cremated remains at home in an urn. Many pet owners feel the same pull to keep a companion close.

Keeping an urn safe through West's seasons
Heat usually comes with air conditioning, and the swing between humid outdoor air and dry, cooled rooms is hard on some materials. Solid wood can move slightly, so joints open or lids stick; lacquered brass holds up better, and unlacquered brass tarnishes faster in humid air. Whatever urn you choose, keep the ashes in their sealed bag inside it. That keeps moisture out and makes a later move much easier.
For an outdoor memorial in West's heat, choose stone, granite or a metal rated for outdoor use and place it in partial shade. Dark granite gets hot to the touch in August but won't be damaged. A biodegradable urn breaks down within a few seasons, while metal, resin or sealed hardwood stays intact for years, which some cemeteries and landowners prefer and others don't accept. How to get from ashes to urn
- Tell your child the ashes are coming home, describing them beforehand: a closed bag inside an ordinary tin or box.
- Let them help choose, offering a shortlist of two or three that you've already vetted for capacity and cost.
- Offer a small keepsake of their own to keep in their bedroom, with the main urn living somewhere the whole family uses.
- Invite them to add something: a drawing or a short note can be tucked under the base.
- Pick a lid that screws or locks shut, above all where a young child could reach the urn.
- Mark the day the urn arrives by doing something small as a family: a candle, a favorite memory shared out loud.
Ways to remember your pet at home
Strong prairie winds, summer hail and the occasional ice storm test any memorial left outside in McLennan County. A solid granite marker set flush with the ground resists wind and mowers, while taller or lighter pieces can topple. If you want a living memorial, a native such as a cedar elm, a bur oak or a Texas redbud tolerates the heavy blackland soil.

How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the West page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the West climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Roughly how many pets die in West each year?

Will I have to travel to Grand Prairie to arrange things?

Is it okay to bury the ashes on our land near West?

If the property might be sold one day, keep a small portion indoors so you're not leaving everything behind.
