Santaquin, Utah
What choosing an urn is like in Santaquin
Wind at the south end of the valley, hot summers and cold winters all wear down outdoor pieces. Granite, bronze or local stone, set low to the ground, will last; resin, plastic and painted wood fade or crack within a few years. Indoors none of that applies, so any sealed urn will protect the ashes, and you can choose purely by size, color and where it will sit.
Many Santaquin families moved down from elsewhere in Utah Valley or the Salt Lake area and still have parents and siblings an hour or so north. If several people want some of the ashes, arrange it before cremation so the portions come back separately. One family urn in Santaquin and small keepsakes for relatives up the valley can keep everyone close to the animal's memory.
In a close community like Santaquin, a pet's death is often noticed by neighbors, church friends and the people at the feed store. Some families choose an urn with that in mind, something that can sit in a front room where visitors will see it, rather than tucked away. Others want a private keepsake that only they understand. Both are right, and neither needs to be expensive.
About 18,989 people live in Santaquin, which makes it the 50th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 55 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Santaquin run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Payson (5 miles), Spanish Fork (13 miles, a larger centre) and Springville (16 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Santaquin too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
7,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Santaquin has (estimate)
How we calculated this
18,989 ÷ 2.5 = 7,596 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
A lower cremation rate, about 46.1%[5] in Utah, means fewer local shops stock urns sized for pets, and fewer engravers and potters have memorial experience. Online sellers fill the gap. If you're commissioning something locally, show the maker a finished urn from a catalog so they understand the size, lid and finish you're after.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Santaquin tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Keeping an urn safe through Santaquin's seasons
Outdoor memorials in Santaquin have to survive July heat and the frosts of January. If you'd like the ashes in the garden, many families bury them in a simple biodegradable urn and put a granite or stone marker above, rather than leaving a decorative urn outside. The marker handles the weather, and the ashes are safely underground whatever the season.
A wooden urn in Santaquin goes through a lot in a year: humid summer air, air conditioning, then dry heat from the furnace in winter. Good hardwood urns are built to cope, but joints can loosen over time. Choose one with a base plate held by screws rather than glue, and keep the ashes sealed in their bag inside, so a loose panel never becomes a problem.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them
What you'll pay for an urn in Santaquin depends mostly on material and size. A national price guide puts ceramic pet urns at $20–$100[6], wooden ones at $30–$150[7], metal at $40–$200[8] and marble or stone at $80–$300[9]. Local crematory counters and online sellers both tend to land inside those ranges, so use them to spot a price that's out of line, and ask for a total that includes engraving and delivery.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Pet ashes and the law in Utah
If you rent in Santaquin, burying an urn in the yard needs your landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can have their own rules. Scattering on public land is usually tolerated when done discreetly, but it isn't always permitted. The notes below cover the basics for Utah; your city or county has the final word.
Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Santaquin.
The rules that apply across Utah (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Utah page. Santaquin may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
From temporary container to urn
- Tell your child the ashes are coming home and what they'll look like: a sealed bag in a plain box or tin.
- Let them help choose, offering a shortlist of two or three that you've already vetted for capacity and cost.
- Offer a small keepsake of their own for their room, while the main urn stays in a shared space.
- Invite them to add something, perhaps a picture they drew or a few words, slipped beneath the urn.
- Pick a lid that screws or locks shut, above all where a young child could reach the urn.
- Mark the day the urn arrives by doing something small as a family: a candle, a favorite memory shared out loud.
Ways to remember your pet at home
In a town known for its cherry and apple orchards, a fruit tree makes a natural memorial, flowering each spring beside the family home. Others prefer a simple engraved stone by the garden gate, a handmade box from a local woodworker, or a pendant carrying a little of the ash. The right memorial is simply the one that fits the way your family lives.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Santaquin each year?
Our estimate is around 580. It comes from Santaquin's population (about 18,989), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 7,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Does the Santaquin climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Santaquin follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 55 miles from Santaquin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
How can I share my pet's ashes with family in other cities?
Most families set aside small shares before filling the main urn, then give each person a matching keepsake urn. Handing keepsakes over in person is simplest. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold, and our guide to primary urns versus keepsakes helps you decide which vessel does which job.
