Pet Urns in Utah: what to know
Most families in Utah buy their pet's urn from one of three places: the crematory that handled the cremation, an online seller or a local maker. Each has its strengths. The crematory's urns are sized to the ashes it returns; online shops offer the widest range; a local potter or woodworker can make something no one else has. Our city pages cover what's typical in each place.
Across the 52 Utah communities we cover, from Salt Lake City, West Valley City and West Jordan to smaller towns, the urn market looks broadly similar: crematory ranges of wood, ceramic and metal, plus online and local makers for anything more personal. What changes is delivery time, the chance to see an urn in person and, in some places, the climate an outdoor memorial has to survive.
We cover 52 communities in Utah, from Salt Lake City, West Valley City and West Jordan to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Utah: summer highs reach about 100°F in Hurricane, while winter lows average 13°F in Heber. In 98% of the Utah communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How Utah thinks about cremation and urns
Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Utah, where about 46.1%[1] are cremated. For pets, though, most families cremate, and that can leave people unsure what to do next, since there's less local habit around urns. Nothing about it is complicated. An urn is simply a container sized to the ashes, and you can choose one whenever you're ready.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) publishes the Utah rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
What pet urns cost in Utah
One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about $50 to more than $1,000[2], and most of that spread comes from hand work: a sculpted figurine or a commissioned ceramic takes far longer than a laser-engraved box. Basic urns start at around $50[3]. For most Utah families, the sweet spot is a solid wooden or ceramic urn with name engraving, well under $200 all in.
If part of the ashes will go into the ground, the cost picture changes. Biodegradable pet urns run $15–$80[4] in one national guide, and outdoor rock or sandstone urns made to sit in a garden cost $300–$395[5] at one crematory network. A simple engraved garden stone over buried ashes is cheaper still: by our estimate, entry prices sit at ~$39[6] across three US sellers. For many Utah families, that pairing costs less than one marble urn.
| Urn or extra | Typical price | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic urn | $20–$100[7] | Colorful and light; can chip in shipping |
| Wooden urn | $30–$150[8] | Warm look, engraves well; fades in strong sun |
| Metal urn (brass, aluminum) | $40–$200[9] | Compact, often a threaded lid |
| Marble or stone urn | $80–$300[10] | Heavy and durable; each piece unique |
| Photo urn | $40–$150[11] | Frame or printed panel on the front |
| Keepsake or mini urn | $15–$60[12] | Holds a small share of ashes |
| Biodegradable urn | $15–$80[4] | For burial or water, not display |
| Name-only engraving | $15–$25[13] | Name and dates cost a little more |
| Photo engraving | $40–$100[14] | Ask for a proof first |

Before you scatter or bury in Utah
Keeping a small share of the ashes in jewelry or a keepsake raises no legal questions at all. Rules matter only if you plan to post ashes, carry them abroad or leave them somewhere other people also use. For any travel, keep the crematory's certificate with the ashes. Here's what applies in Utah.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Utah local government directory.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Talk to the family first. Find out who wants a small share, and whether some ashes are going into the ground or the wind.
- Set aside the shares before filling the main urn; the ashes sharing planner shows how much each person can have.
- Buy matching keepsakes for relatives in other cities, and hand them over in person where you can.
- If you must post ashes, read your carrier's rules before packing. USPS is the only US service that takes them, and only via Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn last, after the shares are out, sized to what remains.
- Plan any scattering for still, dry weather, and hold a small amount in reserve for anyone who asks to take part afterwards.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials
An urn doesn't have to be the final resting place. Plenty of people keep the ashes at home for a year or two and then decide to bury them, scatter them or split them further. Choosing an urn that opens easily, with the ashes still in their sealed bag, keeps every one of those choices open.

Questions people ask
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Utah?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest choice. Parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Pick a quiet spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter close to the ground and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
What size urn does my pet need?
Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[16]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.
How can our family share a pet's ashes across Utah?
Set aside small shares before filling the main urn and give each person a matching keepsake. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold. Keepsake or mini urns typically cost $15–$60[12] in the US (per one large retailer), and sets are cheaper per piece.
Is there free pet loss support in Utah?
Yes. University vet schools in the US offer free phone support: Cornell's pet loss hotline is answered by vet students with grief-counseling training, and Tufts runs a helpline too. Many local crematories and vet clinics also run support groups or keep a list of counselors. Reaching out doesn't need a reason beyond missing your pet.
Do crematories in Utah sell urns?
Almost all do, and many include a basic urn or box in their private cremation package. Their range is usually modest but sized to the ashes they return. You're free to decline it and buy elsewhere; the ashes are safe in the temporary container until your urn arrives.
Can I send my pet's ashes to family in another part of Utah?
It depends on the carrier. In the US, only the Postal Service accepts cremated remains, by Priority Mail Express with a special label; some other countries' postal services refuse them. Sending an empty keepsake urn is easy. Many families carry the ashes themselves and pass them on in person.
