Orem, Utah
Choosing a pet urn in Orem
Dry air, strong sun and long freezing spells are hard on some materials. Anything left outside in Orem faces summer UV and months below 32 degrees, so pick granite, bronze or glazed stoneware for a permanent piece. Indoors the range is wider: wooden boxes, glass art containing a little ash, framed paw prints, or a display case with a collar, tag and favorite toy.
Student renters, young families and residents who have lived in Orem for decades tend to want very different memorials. A compact photo urn or a keepsake pendant travels easily if you move after graduation. Long-term homeowners sometimes prefer a garden marker under a fruit tree, a nod to the city's orchard past, which can stay with the house even if the ashes are kept indoors.
Families in and around Orem often have land, which makes burying the ashes, or part of them, a natural choice. You can bury ashes in almost any container, but a biodegradable urn returns to the soil, while a sealed wooden box or a metal urn lasts much longer. If there's any chance the land will be sold, think about keeping a portion indoors in a keepsake so you're not leaving everything behind.
With roughly 95,214 residents, Orem is the 7th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 34 miles (54 km) away, which is where some providers serving Orem are based.
Our pages for Provo (5 miles), Pleasant Grove (6 miles) and American Fork (7 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Orem as well.
Our estimate
35,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Orem
How we calculated this
95,214 ÷ 2.5 = 38,086 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 35,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
2,900
Orem families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
35,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,900 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation in Utah, and what it means for urns
Burial is still the usual choice for people in Utah, with cremation at around 46.1%[5], and some families feel a pet deserves a grave too. An urn can give you that. Placed in the ground at home or in a cemetery plot, under a small stone, it's a place to visit, and it can be lifted and taken along if you ever move house.
That Utah rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Orem only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Orem
Order timing is worth a thought in Orem. Summer parcels can bake on a porch and winter ones can be delayed by storms. If a date matters, order early, ask for the production and shipping times separately and have the urn delivered where someone can bring it straight inside. Glass and glazed pieces arriving on a freezing day should warm up in the box before you open them.
A wooden urn in Orem goes through a lot in a year: humid summer air, air conditioning, then dry heat from the furnace in winter. Good hardwood urns are built to cope, but joints can loosen over time. Choose one with a base plate held by screws rather than glue, and keep the ashes sealed in their bag inside, so a loose panel never becomes a problem.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Orem
One industry report says personalized pet urns range from about $50 to more than $1,000[6], and most of that spread comes from hand work: a sculpted figurine or a commissioned ceramic takes far longer than a laser-engraved box. Basic urns start at around $50[7]. For most Orem families, the sweet spot is a solid wooden or ceramic urn with name engraving, well under $200 all in.

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Utah
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Utah.
The official Utah local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Orem.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Orem or your HOA adds anything.
How to get from ashes to urn
- Ask what came with the cremation. A simple urn often comes as part of the package, sometimes with the option to trade up.
- Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
- Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
- Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, especially if a date matters.
- Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
- Place it out of direct sun, well clear of radiators, somewhere steady and high enough that neither a child nor another pet can get to it.
Ways to remember your pet at home
With Mount Timpanogos in view from much of the city, some Orem families choose a mountain theme for a memorial: an engraved stone with the peak's outline, or a photograph from a favorite trail framed beside the urn. If you hope to scatter ashes in the canyon or on the mountain, check the rules of the agency that manages that land first, and keep clear of streams and busy trailheads.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Orem?
Usually yes. Provo is about 5 miles away, Pleasant Grove is about 6 miles away and American Fork is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Orem big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 35,000 Orem households keep a dog or cat and around 2,900 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 95,214), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the Orem page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[5] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Orem climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 95°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can I keep a ceramic urn outside through an Orem winter?
It's risky. Water that seeps into unglazed ceramic or porous stone expands when it freezes and can crack the urn, and Orem sees freezing lows in January, February, November and December. For outdoor memorials, choose granite, sealed stone or outdoor-rated metal, or bring the urn indoors for the coldest months.
Is it okay to bury the ashes on our land near Orem?
On land you own, burying ashes is generally fine and much simpler than burying a body. Choose a spot away from wells and streams, and use a biodegradable urn if you want the ashes to return to the soil. If the property might be sold one day, keep a small portion indoors so you're not leaving everything behind.
