Pet urns in Provo: the local picture
With BYU and a strong culture of family history, many Provo households keep careful records and photographs of the animals they have loved. Memorial choices often reflect that: a scrapbook page, a framed collage, an engraved keepsake box, a pendant, or a small stone for the garden. Decide how many relatives may want a share before the ashes come back.
Students and young families often move on after a few years in Provo, so portability matters when choosing a memorial. A small urn, a piece of keepsake jewelry or a framed paw print travels easily to a new city or across the country. If parents or siblings back home would like some of the remains, request separate labeled portions when you first arrange the cremation.
Pet owners around Provo often find the vet clinic is the easiest place to see a few urns in person. Many clinics keep a small sample shelf from the crematory they use, so you can check a lid, feel the weight and compare two finishes side by side. Ask at the front desk; the samples are often kept in a back room rather than on show.
Provo is home to about 114,527 people, the 4th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 39 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Provo run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Orem (5 miles), Springville (5 miles) and Spanish Fork (8 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
42,000
Provo: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
114,527 ÷ 2.5 = 45,811 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 42,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
3,500
dog and cat deaths per year in Provo, our estimate
How we calculated this
42,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,500 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Why urns are common in Utah
At roughly 46.1%[5], the cremation rate in Utah is on the low side. Where cremation is less usual, faith leaders and older relatives may have questions about keeping ashes at home. Many traditions see an animal's remains differently from a person's, but a conversation beforehand can spare hurt feelings. A modest urn in a private room is an easy middle ground.

Keeping an urn safe through Provo's seasons
Order timing is worth a thought in Provo. Summer parcels can bake on a porch and winter ones can be delayed by storms. If a date matters, order early, ask for the production and shipping times separately and have the urn delivered where someone can bring it straight inside. Glass and glazed pieces arriving on a freezing day should warm up in the box before you open them.
Because Provo swings from July heat to winter frost, a planted memorial needs a little planning. Put a biodegradable urn and a young tree in the ground in spring or early autumn, water it through its first summer and mulch it before January. A tree that survives its first year usually settles in, and it will mark the spot for decades.

Pet urn and engraving prices for Provo
Engraving is usually the add-on that surprises people. Simple name-only engraving on a pet urn typically adds $15–$25[6], a photo engraving $40–$100[7] and a paw print or symbol $20–$35[8] (per one large retailer). On a mid-priced wooden urn, name-and-dates engraving can add about 36% to the price[9]. The table below shows typical US ranges, so you can compare Provo quotes like for like.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Utah allows with pet ashes
Pet ashes are sterile, mineral remains, so the rules around them are lighter than for burying a body. Still, a few things are worth checking before you scatter or bury: who owns the land, whether a park or beach has its own policy and, if you'll bury an urn, whether it's biodegradable. Here's what applies in Utah.
The official Utah local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Provo.
The rules that apply across Utah (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Utah page. Provo may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Leave the temporary container sealed right up until the new urn is in your hands and looked over.
- Read how the urn opens. Many wooden urns open from the base with small screws; many metal ones have a threaded lid.
- Lay out a towel or tray on a table, and have a spoon or funnel ready in case you need it.
- Place the sealed bag inside and fold the top over. Only open the bag if it truly won't fit.
- Close and secure the urn; on a threaded lid, a touch of glue keeps children and other pets from working it loose.
- Recycle or keep the temporary box; plenty of people store it alongside the paperwork, since it's part of the story.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Provo's climate swings between hot, dry summers and snowy winters, and outdoor memorials have to cope with both. Polished granite and cast bronze keep their lettering; softer stone and painted concrete flake after a few winters. For a planted tribute, native bigtooth maple, Gambel oak or a flowering serviceberry fits the local climate and turns brilliant shades of orange and red each October.

Questions people ask
How does Provo's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Provo, with average highs around 95°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 39 miles from Provo) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[5]. We show it on the Provo page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Provo?
Usually yes. Orem is about 5 miles away, Springville is about 5 miles away and Spanish Fork is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is there free support if I'm struggling after my pet's death?
Yes. Several US veterinary schools run free pet loss helplines. Tufts University's helpline is free[11] and volunteer-staffed on weekday evenings, with voicemail at other times, and Cornell's hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors. Talking to someone can make practical choices, like the urn, feel less heavy.
How much does a pet urn cost in Provo?
National price guides put ceramic pet urns at $20–$100[12], wooden ones at $30–$150[13] and marble or stone at $80–$300[14]. Keepsakes cost less, at $15–$60[15] (per one large retailer). Provo prices usually fall inside those ranges; engraving and delivery add to the total, so ask for a written price for the finished urn.
