Pet urns in Lehi: sizes, costs and engraving

Lehi, Utah

What choosing an urn is like in Lehi

Utah families have traditionally leaned toward burial, and the state's human cremation rate, about 46 percent, still sits below the national figure. For pets in Lehi, though, cremation is the usual path, because few new lots or rentals leave room for a grave. Keeping the ashes lets you decide on the final memorial later: an urn at home, a keepsake for each child, or a scattering somewhere meaningful.

A lot of Lehi households are only a few years into their current home, and many expect to move again as jobs shift around Silicon Slopes. Portable memorials suit that life: a bookshelf-sized urn, a pendant carrying a little ash, or an engraved ornament for the tree. A garden stone or a planting can wait until you are sure this address is permanent.

In a smaller place like Lehi, the urn usually comes from one of two places: the crematory your vet uses, often somewhere around Salt Lake City, or an online seller. The crematory's range may be small, but the pieces are chosen to fit the ashes they return. If you'd like to see the options, ask the vet for a printed catalog or photos rather than choosing a name from a list.

Lehi's population is around 95,313, the 6th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 24 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lehi run from there.

The closest communities we cover are Highland (4 miles), American Fork (5 miles) and Bluffdale (5 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Lehi too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Our estimate

35,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households Lehi has (estimate)

How we calculated this

95,313 ÷ 2.5 = 38,125 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 35,000. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

2,900

Estimated dog and cat losses in Lehi each year

How we calculated this

35,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,900 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

A pet at home in Lehi

Cremation in Utah, and what it means for urns

Burial is still the usual choice for people in Utah, with cremation at around 46.1%[5], and some families feel a pet deserves a grave too. An urn can give you that. Placed in the ground at home or in a cemetery plot, under a small stone, it's a place to visit, and it can be lifted and taken along if you ever move house.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Lehi tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Heat, cold and damp: materials for Lehi

Order timing is worth a thought in Lehi. Summer parcels can bake on a porch and winter ones can be delayed by storms. If a date matters, order early, ask for the production and shipping times separately and have the urn delivered where someone can bring it straight inside. Glass and glazed pieces arriving on a freezing day should warm up in the box before you open them.

Because Lehi swings from July heat to winter frost, a planted memorial needs a little planning. Put a biodegradable urn and a young tree in the ground in spring or early autumn, water it through its first summer and mulch it before January. A tree that survives its first year usually settles in, and it will mark the spot for decades.

How much to budget for an urn

Engraving is usually the add-on that surprises people. Simple name-only engraving on a pet urn typically adds $15–$25[6], a photo engraving $40–$100[7] and a paw print or symbol $20–$35[8] (per one large retailer). On a mid-priced wooden urn, name-and-dates engraving can add about 36% to the price[9]. The table below shows typical US ranges, so you can compare Lehi quotes like for like.

Before you scatter or bury in Utah

Most families never need to think about rules at all: the urn stays at home, and that's allowed everywhere. If you'd like to scatter or bury some of the ashes in or around Lehi, a quick check with the landowner or the park authority avoids awkward moments. Here's a summary for Utah.

We keep Utah's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Utah rules summary. Before a home burial in Lehi, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

How to get from ashes to urn

  1. Let the cremation happen first. The urn can be chosen weeks later; nothing about it has to be settled on the day your pet dies.
  2. Keep one small thing back before the body leaves, where possible: a lock of fur or their collar might become part of a keepsake down the line.
  3. Write down your pet's healthy weight, meaning what they weighed before any illness took its toll, because that number sets the urn size.
  4. When the ashes arrive, check the label carries your pet's name before putting the box or bag in a calm corner of the house.
  5. Look at urns slowly, keeping the weight figure nearby for the capacity check, then narrow the field to three at most.
  6. Order when you feel settled, not because a countdown on a website says a discount is ending.

Keepsakes, displays and living memorials

The Wasatch climate is tough on outdoor pieces. Intense sun at this elevation fades dyes and resin, and months of alternating frost and thaw crack cheap concrete. Granite, bronze and kiln-fired ceramic last far longer. For a planted tribute, a bigtooth maple or a serviceberry is native to these mountains and copes with Lehi yards better than a water-hungry ornamental.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lehi?

Usually yes. Highland is about 4 miles away, American Fork is about 5 miles away and Bluffdale is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 24 miles from Lehi) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is cremation common in Utah?

For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Lehi follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is Lehi big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 35,000 Lehi households keep a dog or cat and around 2,900 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 95,313), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

How do I make sure the engraving is right?

Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.

When should we plant a memorial tree with the ashes in Lehi?

Spring or early autumn is usually kindest, after the frosts of January and before the heat of July. A young tree needs regular watering through its first summer. If you're mixing ashes into the soil rather than using a bio urn, one gardening guide suggests letting the mixture sit for 90–120 days[11] before planting, because ashes are alkaline and salty.
