Hurricane, Utah
Buying an urn locally or online in Hurricane
Intense sun, heat above 100 degrees and sudden late-summer monsoon storms are hard on outdoor memorials. Resin fades and cracks, and dark metal gets too hot to touch by midday. Native stone, granite and bronze last longer, especially set in partial shade. Indoors, any sealed container is fine, so choose based on what you like to look at every day.
Southwest Utah's scenery gives memorials a natural theme: a sandstone marker, an urn in a red or ochre glaze, or a keepsake engraved with the outline of the Pine Valley Mountains or the Zion cliffs. You don't need anything elaborate. A simple piece that brings to mind the landscape where you shared your days with your pet is often enough.
An engraving mistake is harder to fix in a town the size of Hurricane, because a replacement usually means shipping the urn back and waiting again. Before you approve any wording, ask the seller for a written proof, check the spelling of your pet's name twice and have a second person read it. If you'd rather see it done, a local jeweller or trophy shop may engrave a plate you can fix to the urn yourself.
With roughly 25,745 residents, Hurricane is the 40th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover.
Families in Hurricane often end up using a provider from Washington (7 miles), St. George (13 miles, a larger centre) and Cedar City (40 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
9,450
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Hurricane
How we calculated this
25,745 ÷ 2.5 = 10,298 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,450. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
790
Hurricane families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
9,450 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 790 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]

11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation customs in Utah and your pet
Burial is still the usual choice for people in Utah, with cremation at around 46.1%[5], and some families feel a pet deserves a grave too. An urn can give you that. Placed in the ground at home or in a cemetery plot, under a small stone, it's a place to visit, and it can be lifted and taken along if you ever move house.
The Utah figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Hurricane
Hurricane summers are hot, with July highs averaging about 100°F. Heat doesn't harm ashes, but it does age urns. A wooden urn on a sunny windowsill will fade within a season or two, printed photo panels bleach and some resin figurines can soften in a very hot room or car. Choose a spot on an inside wall, away from west-facing windows, and draw the blinds on the hottest afternoons.
For an outdoor memorial in Hurricane's heat, choose stone, granite or a metal rated for outdoor use and place it in partial shade. Dark granite gets hot to the touch in July but won't be damaged. If you're planting a tree with a biodegradable urn, avoid planting at the height of summer: young trees struggle in June, July, August and September, and a cooler season gives the roots time to settle.

What pet urns cost in Hurricane
One US crematory network publishes its pet urn prices: wooden urns from $55–$290[6], with most around $98, ceramic urns $90–$290[7] and metal urns $96–$265[8]. Its marble urns cost $260 to $345[8], about three times the price of ceramic, a gap that shows up in national price guides too[9]. Expect Hurricane providers to be in the same territory.

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Utah
Rules about pet ashes are about places, not containers. The urn you choose, whether it's engraved and how long you keep it are entirely your call. What follows for Utah covers where scattering and burial are generally accepted, so you can plan any outdoor part of the memorial without worrying.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
The Utah page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Hurricane's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Choosing and filling the urn, step by step
- Decide whether each pet gets its own urn or whether you'd like a matching set that grows over the years.
- Pick a design that will still be made later, ideally one a nearby craftsperson could reproduce, if future urns need to match.
- Size each urn for one pet; buying a companion urn for two is best left until you actually have both sets of ashes.
- Label the base of every urn, naming who it holds and when, whatever is engraved on the front, so there's no confusion later.
- Leave shelf space beside the first urn so a later one can join it without rearranging the room.
- File each crematory certificate with its urn, whether that's an envelope fixed to the underside or all of them in one drawer.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials
Many Hurricane residents moved here from other states, which means children and old friends often live hundreds of miles away. If the ashes are to be shared, have the provider split them from the outset or order a family urn along with several tiny keepsakes. Pendants and mini urns travel easily in a carry-on, a real help when relatives visit only once or twice a year.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Hurricane?
The closest communities we cover are Washington (about 7 miles), St. George (about 13 miles) and Cedar City (about 40 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Hurricane too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the Hurricane climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 100°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hurricane follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How many pet owners live in Hurricane?
By our estimate, about 9,450 households in Hurricane have at least one dog or cat, and around 790 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 25,745, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Do pet crematories near Hurricane sell urns?
Almost all of them do, and many include a basic urn or wooden box in their private cremation package. The range is usually small but chosen to fit the ashes they return. If you'd like something more personal, you can buy elsewhere and keep the ashes in the temporary container until it arrives. Ask the crematory whether they'll swap the included urn for an upgrade at the price difference.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
