Pet urns in Logan: the local picture
Logan Canyon and the Bear River Range are minutes from town, and many families have favorite spots along the Logan River or up in the high country. Some set aside part of the ashes to release up the canyon later, once they have checked Forest Service rules, and place the rest in an urn indoors. An autumn photograph of the canyon's maples makes a fitting companion piece.
Students and young families come and go with the university calendar, so many Logan households want a memorial that can travel. Small urns, cremation pendants and photo keepsakes all pack easily into a moving box. Longer-term residents with gardens sometimes choose a flat stone set among perennials or a young tree, which suits the valley's deep farm soil and its bitter winters.
Farm families around Logan sometimes need urns for animals most urn sellers don't think about: a working collie, a pair of barn cats, a much-loved goat. For larger animals, check capacity carefully, since extra-large urns are less common and cost more. For several small animals, a shelf of matching simple boxes, or a single garden memorial with the ashes buried beneath, can be easier than a separate urn for each.
Logan's population is around 55,576, the 17th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 68 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Logan run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Brigham City (19 miles), North Ogden (30 miles) and Ogden (36 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Logan too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
20,500
Logan: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
55,576 ÷ 2.5 = 22,230 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 20,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,700
Estimated dog and cat losses in Logan each year
How we calculated this
20,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,700 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Why urns are common in Utah
About 46.1%[5] of people in Utah are cremated, and many families still think of a grave as the natural memorial. If that feels right for your pet too, you can have both: cremate, then bury the ashes in an urn in the garden or a pet cemetery, with a small marker on top. It's simpler and less costly than a full burial, and the grave can be dug at any time of year the ground allows.

Heat, cold and damp: materials for Logan
Indoor heating matters as much as the cold outside. Forced-air vents and radiators dry the air, and a wooden urn placed right next to one can shrink, crack or open at the joints. Keep wooden urns a few feet from heat sources and out of the path of hot air. Metal, stone and ceramic don't mind dry air, which is one reason they're popular in cold places.
If you've chosen a biodegradable urn for planting, winter is a time to wait. Paper, salt and plant-fiber urns are made to break down, so keep them somewhere dry indoors until the ground thaws. In Logan, that usually means planting after January has passed and the soil can be worked. The memorial budget planner can help you plan the tree and the urn together.

Budgeting for an urn and keepsakes in Logan
If part of the ashes will go into the ground, the cost picture changes. Biodegradable pet urns run $15–$80[6] in one national guide, and outdoor rock or sandstone urns made to sit in a garden cost $300–$395[7] at one crematory network. A simple engraved garden stone over buried ashes is cheaper still: by our estimate, entry prices sit at ~$39[8] across three US sellers. For many Logan families, that pairing costs less than one marble urn.
The Utah price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Nobody needs a permit to keep an urn on a shelf. Permission only comes into it once part of the ashes goes somewhere shared, such as a park, a beach, a river or a cemetery. Before any of that, find out who looks after the place you have in mind, since the answer usually comes from them rather than from a single law. The general picture for Utah is below.
The official Utah local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Logan.
The rules that apply across Utah (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Utah page. Logan may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Step by step in Logan
- Talk to the family first. Agree who would like a keepsake and whether any ashes will be scattered or buried.
- Set aside the shares before filling the main urn; the ashes sharing planner shows how much each person can have.
- Buy matching keepsakes for relatives in other cities, and hand them over in person where you can.
- If you must post ashes, check your postal service's rules first. In the US, only USPS accepts them, by Priority Mail Express.
- Choose the main urn once you know what's left, sized for that amount.
- Plan any scattering for a calm, dry day, and keep a little back in case someone wants to join later.
Sharing a pet's memory across the family
Cache Valley's deep cold is hard on outdoor memorials; meltwater seeps into hairline cracks, refreezes and splits cheap stone and poured concrete. Granite, bronze and kiln-hardened stoneware hold up far longer here. For a planted tribute, pick something rated for very low temperatures, such as a lilac, chokecherry or crabapple, and bring delicate glass or wooden pieces indoors before the first hard frost.

If you live between Logan and Lehi, West Valley City, Salt Lake City and West Jordan, either page applies. Every other community in Utah, and all of the United States, is listed too.

Questions people ask
Why does the Logan page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[5] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Logan?
The closest communities we cover are Brigham City (about 19 miles), North Ogden (about 30 miles) and Ogden (about 36 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Logan too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How does Logan's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Logan, with average highs around 89°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Where are the providers that serve Logan actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 68 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Logan and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
What should I do with the temporary container once the ashes are in the urn?
Some families recycle it; many keep it, along with the crematory's certificate or identification tag, as part of the record of what happened. If you keep the ashes in their original sealed bag inside the urn, the bag and tag often stay together anyway. There's no right answer, so keep whatever feels meaningful.
Can two pets share one urn?
Yes. Companion urns are made to hold two sets of ashes, sometimes in separate compartments. Many families prefer matching single urns instead, because pets rarely die at the same time and a companion urn can sit half empty for years. If you do choose a shared urn, size it for both pets' combined weight.
